Connect Amp keeps dropping out audio

Hi I have 4 Connect Amps that have been working fine for some years but just recently they are dropping the Audio for a few seconds which is very annoying. I have spoken to Sonos Support on a few occasions and done everything they have suggested to fix this which they say is WiFi Interference such as switching channels etc but still have problems. This happens on any music source but I have noticed when the speakers go silent the sound levels are still going up and down on the app as if its playing the audio in other words not muted, not sure if this helps identify the problem. I am getting to the point now where soon these will be removed as they just aren't worth the hassle. I have seen a few threads where people have had the same problem but the only answers I have seen are contact Sonos Support.

Has anyone had this problem and got a viable solution??????

Some posts suggest an issue with S2 being introduced so does anyone know if this is a problem??

So far I have tried as suggested by Sonos to give the 5GHz Wifi a different name, turned off auto on 2.4GHz channels so I can force it to be 1, 6 or 11, I haven't tried setting to 20Mhz so will give this a try.

Btw Ken can you give me more advice re your comment “give Sonnet a shot”? I did originally have one C:A hard wired to my switch with ethernet cable and then daisy chained the other 3 C:A’s but this didnt help, do you think it would be better for each C:A to be hard wired to the switch?

SonosNet is where one device is wired to the router (but positioned at least one metre away) - that allows Sonos to use its own in-built wireless mesh signal… so all your other Amps connect back to the wired device either directly or indirectly. If doing that, it’s best to do two further things…

  1. Set the SonosNet channel in the App’s network settings so it is at least 5 channels away from your chosen 2.4Ghz router channel, which should in turn be on fixed channel 1, 6 or 11 and ideally set at 20Mhz channel-width (if the router allows).
  2. Remove the router WiFi SSID from the Sonos App network settings as the local WiFi signal is no longer used and that will stop the Amps trying to hop onto your WiFi signal.

All that said however, the fact you now have the option to wire all to a switch - it makes sense to go with that option instead and you could even choose to switch off the Amps WiFi adapters in the Sonos App to reduce the potential for network loops/storms, but if they do work fine with the WiFi adapters enabled, then I would just leave them - that’s a matter for yourself.

Here are some links that may assist too…

Coming late to this discussion, I've run S1 app without ever upgrading to S2 as I have an older connect. I've a mesh WiFi running and it's definitely the connect that's the issue, no other issues with a selection of play ones, a play 3 and playbar. 30% discount to me isn't acceptable as it's a design issue on the connect and if it's memory related the S1 app/software should reflect this. All I want is access to Plex, Sonos radio and a podcast app. Sonos should fix this as it was never an issue previously.

Up until this point I had no idea that running with S1 is also an issue, going on information from other discussions downgrading was a sure fire way to stop the drop outs. Incidentally my Move gen1 started dropping out the other day at the same time as my connect amps, I guess this will just go on and on with Sonos denying any responsibility, they have now asked me to call them to go through some live troubleshooting! Not holding my hopes up!

Don't hold your breath with live support their knowledge is likely less than yours. Changed my WiFi recently and lost the S1 app, call abandoned after 1 hour with NO solution from their side. I fixed it myself by renaming the network and starting again. Sonos once had this market, but now they most definitely are also rans.

On occasion a defective CONNECT:AMP can cause network issues. Experiment with powering down one at a time.

In terms of network stability, reserve IP addresses for all regular network clients.

I had the same issue with my only connect amp, an old ZP 120.  I also have 2 x ZP80’s and the original Sonos Soundbar with the original Sonos Subwoofer, yes the ZP 80’s are really old stuff, connected to really nice Marantz and Denon amps but they’ve always worked great, as has the ZP120 until recently when drop outs started.  After reading through many threads here I thought I was f’d for allowing the last update to go through.  However, I think I found a fix for my set up.  If the first zone I chose is the ZP 120 amp and then I added other zones, the ZP 120 will drop out constantly.  But, if I start with any ZP 80 and then add the ZP 120 then I have no problems.  The other thing to know is one of my ZP 80’s is connected directly to my modem router and the Denon amp.  That’s the unit I listen to more than anything and where I usually start grouping items.  So in summary, try using a non-amped connect like a ZP 80 or ZP 90 as the first room before adding Connect Amp ZP100’s and ZP120’s.  If you do not have any ZP 80’s or 90’s (the non-amped connect boxes), you could try picking one up for $25 used and use that to connect to your modem and make that the first link in your groupings to solve your Connect amp issues.  Just tossing that out there for you all, I hope it helps someone.

Since you’re on S1 you must have had a different problem (showing the same symptoms), since the problem spoken about here seems to be a memory overflow on older devices using S2.

I posted on another thread before I knew about this one. We built a new house about five years ago and we were convinced by one of the contractors to install all Sonos equipment inside the house. We have seven of the connect amps along with about 10 to 15 other devices from Sonos. These connect amps  all started having a problem last year like everyone else. Dropping audio.  On one I use the most, there is a subwoofer in the mix.  The connect amp will drop out while we hear the subwoofer still thumping along.  Like everyone else I jumped through all the hoops Sonos asked me to do including submitting diagnostics and all they are telling me is the products are old and I need to update with a 15% discount.

We live almost smack dab in the middle of 150+ acres. So neighbors and their Wi-Fi is not our issue. I am not ruling out some occasional Wi-Fi interference inside the house, but we mostly had been fine until the middle of last year.  I have wasted time trying to configure everything over and in different ways when it sounds like these old amps just can’t handle it anymore.

I don’t think I’m willing to pay for a bunch of new Sonos equipment with a 15% discount when I may have to do this all over again in a few years. I’m considering what alternatives are out there.  Thanks.

I was curious if the new software they just rolled out (which is complete garbage without ability to modify the queue) fixed the issue with old connects? For one of my systems I did cave and buy a port, and it resolved all my issues.

The dumpster fire is just the app, no firmware update, so no fix. Maybe they will figure it out someday.

So far the new app rollout was a complete disaster as it’s wonky slow and nothing works, they’ve updated the app in the last couple of days which is somewhat better but still buggy. No firmware updates that I could see but I guess at this point they’re trying to put out a multitude of fires I doubt this issue is in their priority list.

And that’s even if they’ll ever try and resolve it which is looking more and more like they will not.

Just wanted to do a quick feedback, it looks as though the last updates have addressed this issue as I haven’t had any drop out in the last few weeks! Anyone else?
