Issue with Alarm Shuffle Setting in Sonos App

Dear Sonos Support Team,

I am writing to report an issue I am experiencing with the alarm feature in the Sonos App.

When setting up an alarm, I selected the shuffle option to play my music randomly. However, instead of playing tracks in a random order, the music continues to play sequentially (in standard order).

Could you please let me know if there is a specific setting I am missing, or if this is a known bug? Currently, it seems I have to manually select shuffle inside the app every time, which defeats the purpose of the automated alarm.

I look forward to your assistance in resolving this issue.

Best regards,

Sonos support doesn't visit here often, you need to call the support folks to get an official response.

@Alvin foo , unfortunately, Support doesn’t ‘live’ here, or even read these forums, only Sonos moderators, which you could, or could not get a direct answer. Your best bet is to call Sonos Support to discuss it.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

As far as I’m aware (and I don’t use the alarm function), the ‘Random’ setting is supposed to be used, when turned on, any time the playlist is in use. If it isn’t, I’d suggest there is indeed a bug, and one you would be best to call in and report, so they can collect hard data from your system to aid in identifying and reproducing the issue.

The SONOS random function is invoked only once when a playlist is built. That track order will continue to be used until the list is rebuilt. This has not been quite what users expected because the tracks will be played with the same starting track and in the same order day after day until the list is rebuilt.

I have seen this catch people out because the shuffle state is tied to the queue that the alarm builds when it starts, not just the toggle in the alarm settings. A workaround that helps is to open the playlist in the app, turn shuffle on in the Now Playing queue, play a track briefly, then re-save the alarm so that shuffled queue is what gets recalled. It is also worth deleting the old alarm completely and creating a fresh one after updating the app, rather than editing the existing one, as edited alarms sometimes keep the old play order. If a fresh alarm still plays sequentially, note the music service and app version, as that detail helps separate a settings issue from a bug.
