Question

Apple Music interruptions with SonosNet

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice from other Sonos users experiencing Apple Music playback issues, particularly with IKEA SYMFONISK speakers.

My setup:

  • 6 IKEA SYMFONISK speakers in total.
  • 2 SYMFONISK Bookshelf speakers configured as a stereo pair.
  • 3 SYMFONISK Table Lamp speakers: one standalone speaker and two configured as a stereo pair.
  • One Bookshelf speaker is connected via Ethernet.
  • The remaining speakers are connected wirelessly through SonosNet.

The issue:

When playing music through the native Apple Music integration in the Sonos app, the SYMFONISK Table Lamp speakers occasionally become completely silent, while playback continues normally in the app.

Interestingly, the two Bookshelf speakers continue playing without interruptions. Spotify and internet radio also seem to work without the same problems.

I initially thought switching to SonosNet would solve the issue. After connecting one Bookshelf speaker via Ethernet, playback seemed more stable for a while. However, after testing the system again, the interruptions occurred once more, even with SonosNet enabled.

Sometimes, at the beginning of playback, the Bookshelf speakers start immediately, while the Table Lamp speakers briefly go silent before synchronising and continuing playback.

I have also tried toggling Crossfade ON and then OFF, following a suggestion from another community discussion, but this has not provided a definitive solution.

My questions:

  1. Could Apple Music Lossless playback be related to these interruptions?
  2. Has anyone experienced similar issues specifically with SYMFONISK Table Lamp speakers?
  3. Could there be a compatibility or firmware-related issue affecting these speakers?
  4. Would connecting both Bookshelf speakers via Ethernet make any difference, or is one wired speaker sufficient for SonosNet?
  5. Do wireless SonosNet speakers automatically act as nodes and relay traffic to other speakers?

I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from users with IKEA SYMFONISK Table Lamp speakers and Apple Music.

Thanks in advance!

Ikea Symfonisks cannot play Apple Music Lossless.

  1. Has anyone experienced similar issues specifically with SYMFONISK Table Lamp speakers?

No. I’m running SonosNet as well.

  1. Could there be a compatibility or firmware-related issue affecting these speakers?

No.

One is sufficient.

  1. Do wireless SonosNet speakers automatically act as nodes and relay traffic to other speakers?

Yes.

  • If you have shared your router's WiFi SSID with Sonos, please remove it.

Is there a way to disable Apple Music Lossless playback in the Sonos app and force standard AAC quality instead?

I would like to test whether this resolves the playback interruptions. If this option is not available, is there an alternative way to disable Lossless streaming on Sonos?

Thank you.

I wrote nonsense earlier, to my surprise Ikea Symfonisk speakers actually can play Apple Music Lossless after all (I own four Symfonisk lamps).

No. Playing Apple Lossless (ALAC) seems to be linked to the reported issue for a number of users, and unfortunately there's no option to force the bitrate to 256 kbps AAC. Sonos sends home network info to Apple's servers whenever a track is requested, which is used to decide whether the stream is delivered in Lossless or AAC. This method seems to have some flaws.

Not sure why you chose to use Sonosnet instead your home Wi-Fi as the Wi-Fi is usually a better and more modern connection option unless your Wi-Fi router is really old.

You didn't say if you are using S1  or S2 software, but if on S2 the settings for each speaker include connection quality ratings, you might want to look at them to see if the signal is an issue.

Not available when running SonosNet.
