After a lot of frustrations and a lot of troubleshooting I have finally got my network and Sonos playing nicely.

I run a Cisco enterprise network at home. WS-C3850-12X48U-E switch and AIR AP3802I and AP1562I access points.

Switch configuration:
IGMP has to be enabled for the VLAN you have your Sonos connected to

ip igmp snooping querier address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (VLAN interface IP)
ip igmp snooping vlan 410 querier address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (VLAN interface IP)
ip igmp snooping vlan 410 immediate-leave

Since I have Sonos Era 100 Pros. If you want them to be able to use more than 15.4 watts of PoE power you need to enable LLDP.  After that they’ll use 30 watts

lldp run

Ports are configured as access ports with spanning-tree portfast

 switchport access vlan 410
 switchport mode access
 spanning-tree portfast

That’s all I needed to do on my switch.

I run a Cisco mobility express controller on 2 of my APs to manage my WiFi network.

You have to enable mDNS for the VLAN your Sonos is on. You should also add the mDNS profiles for Sonos, Spotify, Airplay, and google cast.  You must allow multicast traffic to 224.0.0.251

  • Sonos: _sonos._tcp.local
  • Spotify Connect: _spotify-connect._tcp.local
  • Google Cast (if used): _googlecast._tcp.local
  • Spotify Connect/AirPlay: _spotify-connect._tcp.local

Once you do that you should start to see your Sonos show up on Spotify or Airplay on a mac.

Sonos devices that can be wired and can’t be wired if you leave wifi enabled. Many people run into problems if they wire the wrong device because it will cause a STP storm that will eventually take your network down.

Devices that I have been able to confirm wired works with leaving WiFi on.
Arc
Arc SL
Beam
Era 300
Era 100 Pro
Sub (Gen 4)

Devices you can’t use wired and leave WiFi enabled.
Play3
Play1
Sonos AMP (first gen of the black ones)

These are the devices I have been able to test with and have confirmed to work or not work.

I’ll update as I get more devices that I have been able to test with.

I have the following surround setups. I have confirmed I can build them over all wireless or a mixed wired and wireless setup.

Surround 1
Arc SL, 2x Era 300, Sub (Gen 4) - all devices wired

Surround 2
Arc, 2x Play3 - Arc wired

Surround 3
Beam, 2x Play3 - Beam wired

As you can see I am lacking in subs. I’ll get them eventually.

If you have any comments or suggestions please post them.
