Sonos 27mcp

Our Chief Innovation Officer, Nick Millington, put a message together that was shared on the Sonos subreddit about Sonos 27mcp. I thought it would be valuable to share with the community here as well:

“I’m excited to share with this community that you can be among the first to try Sonos 27mcp.

It’s live now at https://mcp.ws.sonos.com/mcp

MCP is the standard for connecting real world software-controlled systems like Sonos to AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude. It’s the mechanism that lets you enter “Group my Kitchen and Patio speakers and crank up the volume” into an AI assistant app, and have the right thing happen on Sonos.

I’ve been living with Sonos 27mcp for the last several months, and as a software developer spending a lot of time on my computer using prompt-based engineering tools, Sonos 27mcp has become my most convenient way to control Sonos.  Without getting out of my flow I can tell my AI assistant to play or pause music, adjust volume, move music between my speakers, or (with their mobile apps) check up on what my Sonos system at home is doing and whether I left anything playing.

In keeping with our efforts to move more development of Sonos “out into the open” and expose ourselves to more feedback, earlier, we’re releasing Sonos 27mcp as part of our “early access” initiative.  That means I’m exceptionally eager to hear your feedback on what’s working for you and not working, and looking forward to the conversation.

As you dig in to what’s on offer in early access, I do want to be transparent that we will encounter a bit of a tradeoff between comprehensive coverage of every Sonos feature and putting a lot of rarely used tools and description into the AI model’s context (which costs users latency and tokens), so that’s a tradeoff we’ll have to navigate together.

I also want to be candid that AI tools are still new to our Sonos Support team and possibly even some of our old pros here on r/sonos, and so we’re going to need to help one another build those skills as we get ready for a broader rollout and support a broader base of users.

Right now, you can add Sonos 27mcp as a custom connector in most AI Assistant apps using the URL above.  I’ve done a post on the Sonos Tech Blog describing what’s in there that you can also read for all the details.  I’m starting the submission process to the various “Connector Stores” later today.

Enjoy!”

It sees all my Sonos rooms. It at first gave an incorrect response saying that “Nano” (Master Bedroom TV) was active. I asked it why it said so; as Nano was idle. It checked again and told me I was right. It then ran another scan and reported all rooms correctly!

 I wonder if AI is open to accepting corrections from premium users or this was An accident.

From my limited experience in working  with AI is that will often make assumptions rather than verifying everything.  As in the case above, perhaps it assumes that everything in the Sonos was idle because you never told it to play anything previously...therefore, everything is idle.   My free version of Claude did something similar in that I told it once to play in the family room, and it played in the game room instead.  It accepted my correction.

I do think you get more ability to have memory and define skills and whatnot with more premium accounts, to get a more dialed-in experience, but the free version can do quite a bit of that.

Can I kick the tires with a free version?

I’ve been using the free version of Claude for months.  There are restrictions but it’s fine for my uses for now.

 I’m using the free version of Claude.  Started a few days ago.  It does learn.  One example… I asked it to play my Apple Music playlist Atmos Cello Concertos.  Instead it played Cello Concertos.  For some reason it was unable to see a space between Atmos & Cello. After some discussion it finally learned which playlist I wanted it to play.  On another occasion it thought I said "at most" instead of "Atmos".  So i had to teach it that if you hear "at most" I really mean "Atmos” ( Not likely to use “at most” in a Chat ).

One thing i discovered is how Claude can be used in a Shortcut.  There may not be much use for this but it was interesting to discover that using Claude in a Shortcut actually works.  All I will show is the basic structure.  There is likely more you would likely add to the shortcut to make it work best for you.

Hi Sonos team,

I've been using Sonos 27mcp through ChatGPT with Deezer and noticed a regression in track-based radio playback.

Expected behavior:
Calling play_station with a track seed should start a dynamically generated Deezer radio mix containing the selected artist and related artists.

Actual behavior:

  • play_station(track="Deadman", music_service="Deezer") plays only "Deadman" by Karnivool, then stops.

  • play_station(track="Olēka", music_service="Deezer") also plays only the selected track.

  • play_station(artist="Karnivool", music_service="Deezer") resolves to the "100% Karnivool" playlist.

  • Searching for station_name="Mix Deadman" resolves to an unrelated playlist featuring Theory of a Deadman.

Important finding:

Starting radio manually from the Deezer integration in the Sonos app works correctly. It creates a dynamic mix that initially plays several Karnivool tracks before transitioning to related artists.

The 27mcp get_now_playing tool identifies this working source as:

source.name = "Mix Deadman"

source.type = "trackList.program"

Previously, the play_station tool successfully started these dynamic mixes directly. The behavior changed recently.

Environment:

  • Sonos 27mcp through ChatGPT

  • Music service: Deezer

  • Speaker: Sonos Move

Is this a known regression in the MCP content resolver? Could the play_station tool support the same native "Start Radio" operation available in the Sonos app?

Thanks!
