Connecting Sonos amp with an external hard drive

I recently bought a Sonos amp and have no problem using Apple Airplay from my Mac and iPhone.  I also have the amp connected to a CD player.

I was told I can connect an external hard drive through the ethernet port but there is no information on the Sonos website on how to do this.  I put all my MP3s and MP4s on a Sandisk solid state hard drive and and hoped to play them directly from this.

Anyone figured out how to do this?  Sorry, but only proficient in Mac operating systems.

You can’t play directly from your hard drive the way you want. You’d need to add the hard drive to your Mac, and play through that.

Much the same if the external drive is setup as a NAS. There is no ‘direct’ Ethernet cabling, it requires a network device such as a router to be involved.

Thanks for the information.
