Google Assistant is Now Gemini: What this means for Sonos

Hey folks, I wanted to give you a heads up about a change that affects Google Assistant on Sonos.

Google has announced that it’s moving users from Google Assistant over to Gemini and because of this shift, Android phones will only support Gemini going forward. This change takes effect today, 4 September 2026. This means that the Google Assistant app is no longer available for voice set up with the Sonos app.

If you still want to use Google Assistant with your Sonos system, you'll need to use an iOS device like an iPhone or iPad.

If you’re looking for other ways to control your Sonos system by voice, Sonos Voice Control (SVC) is available (and works with Philips Hue). You can find out more info about Sonos Voice Control at sonos.com/sonos-voice-control.

There’s no support for Swedish, so unfortunately, it’s not an option for us.

So I'm am existing user who already had setup Google assistant prior to this change

Is this change the reason for the issues reported in the below thread? If not, can you provide an update please?

@ShaunFromSonos are you going to bother replying or just ignore your customers?

Sonos responds to support calls, this is a user to user forum so probably / usually not.

Since this morning all I get from Google on Sonos when commanding my lights or blinds is "Something went wrong” or "There was a glitch. Try again in a few seconds". Nest Mini works fine. Does anyone else experience this?

I did not move over to Gemini yet.

The problem does seem to subside. I've succeeded in turning my Hue lights and my Daikin AC on via Google Assistant on Sonos this morning but had to ask twice - first command was answered with “There was a glitch. Try again in a few seconds.”
