I never showed people how to use Sonos......
..... Are you saying not only do I have to hold a pre-party class to teach every guest to do what used to be intuitive, I now have to have them save their work after adding their track in case someone else fails the pop quiz?

QFT. They need to bring back an option to lock the queue.
I am a big Sonos fan but the issue with the queue has totally put me off. I would have spent another £1k on new speakers for my house but have held off. I also do not recommend this to friends now.

If only there was another product of such quality... well Apple are releasing one this Christmas and maybe it is time to sell up and switch.
It's a pretty crappy move by them. Unfortunately for Sonos, it's also a very easily copied feature. Some competitor will figure this out, and then Sonos will be the next Blackberry.Completely ludicrous statement. I absolutely hate the change Sonos made but let's keep some sense of perspective, please.

I am trying to recall all of the options that the participants have offered. I might miss one here or there, but I have noted this many:

1. Allow users to roll back the revision

2. Provide a switch for the UI to handle parallel functionality

3. Create separate apps

4. Disable queue clearing from the top level of the apps

5. Obliterate 6.4 and send it to Hades

Add any I missed. As it stands, I'd vote for #2...
We accidentally erased a ques of several dozen songs or more several times nowHow come? If the queue's been edited there's a large warning pop-up front and centre.

add a microphone to the Play:5
Ha! And took away all the original PLAY:5, replacing it with a totally different design.

How come? If the queue's been edited there's a large warning pop-up front and centre. But if it hasn't been modified it will overwrite without warning. I know such an instance it's more easily replaceable but it still means more button clicks trying to get back to what you were listening to seconds before.
There is so much inconsistency in the app now that it's so difficult or even impossible to know exactly what will actually happen when you select a song - it all depends on how you got to that song (maybe a search) and how the currently playing music was 'arrived' at. Inconsistent results from the same effective action can never really be a 'good' thing in any UI.
It would seem i don't always get this pop-up?Maybe your queue hadn't changed since it was loaded (from a playlist, album, etc)? The logic is that a queue which can readily be recreated by a single action is not protected with the warning, whereas a queue that the user has edited is.

A single track selected from search is inserted (without prompt) after the current track. There have been understandable gripes that in a static queue -- one which hasn't yet been played, or which has fully played -- the 'current track' is track #1, so an insertion from search goes in as track #2.

And your comment about the Play:5 is fair, though I didn't feel it was significant enough to warrant replacing the Play:5s I have that are just a few years old.
The PLAY:5 Gen2 is so utterly different in design and performance from Gen1 that many of us think Sonos should perhaps have called it something different. Given that they can be Trueplay-tuned they'll handsomely see off conventional HiFi speakers -- passive and active -- which are significantly more expensive.
... another customer signing up to complain. Take note Sonos and sort this ridiculous update out.
Actually, it wasn't Sonos' who thought they knew better, it was a "large number of users" who requested for years that the queue features be changed for iTunes style player controls. So there goes the "customer is always right" theory.
It's not like there is only 1 type of customer and everyone has the same opinion... there can be several types of customers, all of which can be right, with their own needs. Not everyone uses Sonos for the same purpose (TV, bathroom, party...). Hence the proposition of several interface options to satisfy everyone.

Anyway, this debate about customer is right or not is probably endless.
I'm just disappointed with Sonos... and I can see that I'm not alone
That is your right. I can understand your desire for a choice, but this is the particular choice you want. Others want the choice to sort playlists in a particular way, or favourites. Or to change the colour scheme. Or not to show TuneIn as a source because they never use it. Or sort albums by date released, or by date added. On the whole Sonos prefers simplicity and commonality. You can agree with that or not, but it is a defensible approach.
There are also hundreds of other suggested developments that have been made, and Sonos could not even implement all of the sensible ones.
I am on your side on the substance of this particular issue, but I think a sense of perspective is needed.

@jgatie sorry. Don't believe you. Nobody picked a controller up and was able to use it without hiccup. The complaints have been queues created being deleted. Save that queue. That your guests may add tracks to that queue and then the queue gets deleted does not eradicate the whole queue that was previously created as it was saved. How to add a track is still very simple! Explaining how to add a track is very simple!
Whilst you may not have had to explain the controller to your guests, which I don't believe, the first time they used it you now have to explain a simple instruction. Your guests will soon learn how to use it.

@Chris. No need to be insulting. That you disagree is fine. I use my system multi-room and apart from forgetting to do something for an oops! moment (which as I RTFM were expected) I have had no problems with the new sysem. The difference is I embrace the new system and work with it rather than hating it and trying to make it do what the old system did the old way.

@soveryfaraway. Nope. BOB is BOB who just happens to have an opinion that does not agree with yours. It's called discussion.

@others I have noted the usual "hate" posts that are bereft of any reason why it is hated.

Hi,

This queue clearing issue is beyond frustrating. Once again I had a my queue cleared of 100+ songs because someone clicked on a wrong button. A typical situation at one of my parties is this: The controller is passed around by a bunch of people who then add songs to the end of the queue. Without fail someone does not hear the instructions to not click on the song directly, and then BLAM, queue is gone and I've lost a great curated list of new songs that I had wanted to save. It is not feasible to save the queue before every play or to educate everyone on the destructive nature of an operation that SHOULD NOT BE DESTRUCTIVE. I've been with Sonos wrong it's inception and have consistently been impressed with the design of both the hardware and software. This issue, however is really beginning to piss me off. This is obviously a major issue for many people and to have it not addressed feels like an insult, especially for those of us that have supported Sonos for over a decade and spend thousands of dollars on it's products. I implore the developers and powers that be at Sonos to please FIX this issue.

Hopefully with the new 8.0 app they will be able to build in the flexibility to have this as an option - old style queuing method or the new 'destructive' version.

And know I hardly ever had to explain anything on old controller. Especially as many are familiar with it using it other places (but experts by no means)

There's a poll now to maybe collate votes in one thread.

I disagree with every single solution BoredofBedlam gave as "problem solved". Jgatie is correct I have never had to teach anyone how to use my Sonos. Saving the queue doesn't keep myself or my guest from stopping what is currently playing. It is not feasible either to be saving the queue all night long as friends and guests add dozens of songs to the queue.

BoredofBedlam - you obviously use your Sonos in a much different manner. That doesn't mean that changes should be made to the controller that don't allow users who use it in a multiuser, multiroom environment should not have protections to keep the music going.

If you were at a bar and the touchtunes jukebox at the bar allowed anyone to walk up and tap on a song and all of a sudden interrupt what everyone was listening to how would you like it. Even if there was a big honking sign on top the touchtunes saying "don't click on a song" people would click on songs all the time.

I agree and I think this speaks to the main point. Clearly there are two camps here that use Sonos in different ways. For me, the social "jukebox" capability provided through the queue was the killer feature that Sonos provided that made it magical, more than any other. It's why I went with Sonos and why I recommend it.
A terrible update. Have been completely satisfied with Sonos until now. If I want 10 songs in my queue or 1000: that's my choice! Give our freedom back!

Amazing you have to go outside of Sonos for this:

(No doubt there are other sites..)

Bless you. I was about to restore my ROM from a Nandroid backup. This is so much easier!

Not going to be much use. You will probably lose much of your settings menu and it will eventually not work if you upgrade the hardware.

Works at the moment.
The 1 thing I have always wanted in the app is an option to play an album starting with the track I have just selected. This update absolutely works for me. Love it !

This functionality could have easily been added without ruining existing behaviour.

Why to play from here does the queue have to be deleted anyhow (vs. just add from there to end of queue).

I have asked this myself and I am STILL waiting on the answer!!! Would be happy for anyone to give me a sensible answer - preferably from a Sonos rep.
