If you are downloading the old APK, you should note that when your controller app is not the same version as your hardware, you will lose much of the Settings menu. This includes adding/editing Sonos devices, music service management, and adding or updating your music library, Even if all your versions are equal and you never update again, external changes will eventually cause music service support to drop off, such as what happened to folks frozen at version 4.x when the BBC changed codecs, Spotify changed APIs, or Sonos changed authentication security on AWS. Also, if you are frozen at a previous version, even if the version numbers match across the software and hardware, there is no way you can add any new Sonos units to your system without upgrading.

So one may want to assess if losing these functions (and eventually rendering the controller useless) is worth reverting back to an older version of the app. It may just be the case that ripping the band-aid off now is better than later, but that is up to the individual.

At the very worst one can just "upgrade" to V8 if any of the above causes a problem and, having done whatever is needed, reinstall the V7.4 version. And presumably all the settings/features etc. you mention would still be available from an up-to-date controller on, say, a PC without having to alter the one on a phone. Though in fact I cant remember when I last added a Sonos device or altered my music library settings or other music service settings. It must be at least one year ago and maybe two.

All I care about on a day-to-day basis is not having that appalling white screen on my phone and being able to navigate easily to/from my music folders, and using functions like the sleep timer and volume control. V7.4 covers all these requirements.

Meh - reverted on my Android phone and I can now use the interface. I can honestly say that if the current interface was what it looked like when I first came to buy my first component, I would not have bought it. I swear I even saw red text on a white background for which room I wanted.
Reverted to 7.4 here too. I could just about cope with the new UI but every time I switched rooms I lost all music services including my local music library. If I re-added one, they would all come back.

Very disappointed with V8, I would be shot if I let software out of the door in this state.
There is nothing wrong with the logic of version 8. In fact it is not much changed from 7.4. The faults are mostly in the visuals, such as icons too big and lack of contrast.

But the biggest flaw is not having the Sonos bar visible on the Now Playing screen. If it were there, then you would have a simple way of getting in one click to things that are essentially the same as in 7.4, and whose logic proceeds the same from that point.

So I remain convinced that the solution is to fix the problems with 8.0, not go back to 7.4.

I think Sonos should have got this 'more right first time'. But I shall judge 8.1 or 8.2 against 7.4. They need to come fairly quickly though

I have to agree... The new update makes things a lot harder to access... Sonos' strength was it's intuitive interface... They got worse with the update that just automatically adds a clicked song to your queue without giving you the option menu of what you want to do with it... Then this update totally made them tank.. I have 16 Sonos pieces in my place, which has made me a Sonos specialist. This is why I can break down clearly why the update fails logically... Sonos, you had a great thing going but you're getting closer to committing suicide with each update.. Listen to these users... Like some in this post, I created a profile just to let you know how disappointing this update is...Give me a call so I can help with constructive feedback.. I want to stay a fan of Sonos but you guys are making it hard.. I definitely don't look at Sonos the same way after this update

Couldn’t agree with you more. I have 18 Sonos myself and will not be buying anymore until Sonos returns to being easy to use-not just for longtime members but for new people who used to be able to pick up a controller and know what to do without a forum to explain it to them
I am also not happy with the new update. I have 9 sonos units and while I could view them all on two screen, I now have to scroll through 4 or 5. The grouping is confusing as the units drop off the list (where the heck is my kitchen grouped as I click on several existing groups to find it)? The white background is awful. The way to change the music source is equally confusing. Please please please resort back to the old app. It was much better!
Please bring back the old Sonos!!! I appreciate the update but it's absolutely nutty. Not user friendly or intuitive for people who have been using Sonos for years. The blinding white screen destroys any chill mood your currently in. I waste so much time thumbing at all options and re thumbing them by accident. Trying to manage multiple rooms quickly is dang near impossible. I'm happy to see I'm not the only one who wants the Sonos we fell in love with back. Baby, come back!!!
It's really bad!!! I actually was showing people the old app as an example of a great user interface. There were so many things you could do in there and it was all easy. Now it's been a few weeks and I still can barely figure out how to do anything at least on the first try. You really should take a look at this and consider reverting. I don't understand why you would mess up something so good.

Its like we are being punished for owning Sonos with this new update please fix this make it basic again please
I registered for the forums for the first time after owing a sonos system for over eight years to add to this. The new UI is terrible for all of the reasons previously listed. I just don't get that someone thought this was a good idea.
Made this account to drop in and state the new UI is awful. Like everyone else voicing their opinion, it's a big step back. Yeah, there is a WAY to do everything, but it takes 2-3x the amount of taps/swipes/clicks to get there. UI people spend millions of dollars and thousands of hours attempting to decrease the number of actions required to do a given action. Keep the new style, but bring back the old simple functionality (and dark background).

Agree! I want the old app. This is pure trash!!!

So when you switch zones, the queue remains??? WTF? I use the living room zone with songs in the queue, move to the bedroom, pull up that zone and it's the same queue as living room? Why doesn't it show what was last played in the bedroom like before???

Stupid! Really stupid!
First post for me although I have been an avid sonos owner for 6+ years and user for 10+ years. I have 5 Connects, 4 Connect:Amps, and a Play:1. What I have always loved about Sonos is that the hardware and software was always simple, intuitive and just worked. It was never buggy or confusing. Anyone (read my parents, wife and kids) could pick up an old sonos controller or use the app on a phone, tablet or iPad and figure it out instantly. It was logica and even advanced functions were quick to find and execute. Not so with this new app. I think that whoever was hired to re-do the FIOS menu on my cable box in the past year got a job at Sonos. While I have nearly figured out how to use the new upp in the months since it has been out, my wife is still lost in the appt and constantly cursing it. My 9 year old used to use the old Sonos app without instruction when she was 6 and now she can't do one thing on the new app at 9. It is really awful. I love Sonos products and have encouraged many people over the years to install a Sonos system. I really feel that this app, if not changed soon, will significantly hurt the company. The easy sell of Sonos products in the past was showing a friend how easy the app (and the hardware) was to use. Now I'm confused. Please Sonos take this to heart and work on an update that will dramatically change/improve the UI.

You’re using the quick grouping function on the Now Playing screen, instead of selecting the room you want using the Rooms tab. It’s very easy once you figure it out.

Even without all the confusion and frustration around the topic, reducing quick selection and grouping to quick grouping was a bad idea. Selection is now everything but quick and easy, without there being a benefit.

And the same goes for most other changes with the new design. They have obvious disadvantages while the benefits are missing in action.
Please revert back to the latest release! Sonos is now broken, user experience is annoying, and the system's status and control is flaky at best. The product has gone from a great one to the worst one in the market today. Please take this bit of advice from a humble software developer and revert back to the last commit from the previous release and go on from there.

May I suggest you look at the SonoPad and SonoPhone apps on the Apple AppStore. Very intuitive and easy to use. On YouTube you can find some vids how it looks like. I didn’t like the version 8.x while in Beta, but Sonos seems not to listen to their customer base. Luckily I could stopped Sonos to update my speakers and app (to block some things on my router) and continue using version 7.4. I also use the user friendly SonoPad app. It even works on a old IPad 1 which is in my bathroom 🙂

The new app really sucks! Sonos needs to learn the lesson Coke did in 1985 when they tried to shove the "new Coke" down our throats! The people spoke out and Coke was forced to bring back what is now know as "classic Coke". The more we speak out against the new app there is a better chance they will produce an app that flows like the old one. Evey one I know that uses Sonos absolutely hates the newer app.

Maybe they can have two controller Apps. Classic controller app and New controller app. Let the Sonos PAYING users decide. I contacted Sonos and they responded that you cannot go back to older version. Very short reply and no explanation why. Customers do not like to be treated like they have no say in the product they purchased and the UI worked perfectly fine until the manufacturer made a major change in the UI. To not give the OPTION to allow you to use the app you have used for years is just real bad customer relations! The existing Sonos users are the largest form of advertising Sonos has and if these users are not taken care of they will talk down the product. SONOS, PLEASE LISTEN TO YOUR PAYING CUSTOMERS.

And feel free to tar and feather the engineer that developed the GUI. Lol.
I fell in love with the Sonos product about five years ago when I purchased my first Play 5. Everything worked great. Now they put out this new app update that has destroyed everything great about Sonos! The glitches in the app do not allow me to play different audios to different speakers. In addition, It takes multiple attempts to change what I am playing to the speaker before it actually works. I am extremely frustrated with the lack of testing by Sonos before releasing this app update. I want the old app back!!!Please try this. Please just try. Let's say you have two rooms and you want to put a track from your music library on in the Kitchen, and you want to search for a particular artist to put on in the Living Room. Substitute your room names obviously.

1. If you are on the Now Playing screen you will need to swipe down the screen. If not, the tab bar should already be visible at the bottom of the screen.
2. If Kitchen (K) or Living Room (LR) is already the highlighted room, go with it. If not, tap either K or LR. Let's assume we have Kitchen highlighted.
3. Tap Browse on the tab bar, and then Music Library, and then just do what you have always done - i.e. find the song and tap to play it.
4. Tap the Rooms button
5. Tap LR once to highlight it
6. Tap Search and then search for what you want just as you have always done. Tap to play your choice.

Does that help?

It isn't always this simple. The extra swiping is a big pain, waste of time. K.I.S.S. principle in effect to remain high end. My family can't use Sonos without my help any more. That is very sad.

This morning I ungrouped office from an office + spa group. Spa remains selected. I select my music from Pandora. It begins blaring in my office. But office isn't selected. I swipe out of spa and select office. But office show a play button because even the app doesn't think office is playing music. I swipe out of office back to spa and pause (but there was no music playing in spa. Now the office group shows music playing. I swipe out of spa and select office. I can finally pause office, but now I have woke someone up with music I never wanted to play in that area of the house at this time. I swipe out of office and select spa. I select my Pandora station. Finally after about 12 pointless swipes I have my music. But Pandora stops after 10 seconds and says "can not play media". I go back to the media tab and chose another Pandora station, and finally I get to chose the station I want again. This process took 90 seconds. Played music in areas I did not want. Required more than a dozen swipes and selections. This is not audiophile satisfaction. This is annoying nuisance and a bad way to start the day for everyone in the house. It just sucks.

The SINGLE WORST FEATURE, if you even want to call it that is queue management for the rooms. Horrific. Literally a joke that this got by QA.

In the old APP (7.4) on Android or iOS, you could have two people playing different queues of music in Room A and Room B. If I closed the app on my phone and later went back in, I went back into the original room and queue I was playing music from.

NOW. When I go back in, I'm presented with the last room and queue that was accessed LAST by any controller on the network.

The queues also get mixed up so that now my Romo A has inherited the queue from Room B and vice versa. Finally getting the controller to switch to a different room is bloody impossible and rarely works without going in and selecting and deselecting multiple rooms until the controller gets it right. During all of this, rooms mysteriously disappear and then reappear.

Seriously the worst upgrade of all time. Back to 7.4 :@

Not my experience.

The crappy part is that you can't even keep the old app like some other apps can, sonos forces you to update which sucks cause in our bars and restaurants the music stops on next reboot then the manager calls me on how to get it working again and it gets old quick cause there has been a lot of updates now.... FIX IT PLEASE

Dear oh dear Jgatie, friendly banter - it’s just banter! Our opinions on this differ but it’s an app. It’s JUST an app. I have nothing against you personally, but just go back and re-read what you posted. It’s stuffed full of the very vitriol you accuse others of. Don’t be so aggressive all of the time. Lighten up already.

Hi everyone. The team has been hard at work incorporating your feedback to the Sonos app and as of today, 8.3 is now available. For details on what's changed, take a look here.
I also created an online profile to chime in on this issue. We have loved our Sonos system for 2 years, and use it 95% of the time we're home. We've been trying to be open minded about this latest update for at least a month, BUT WE STILL HATE IT. Not intuitive, too many extra steps and swiping away of screens to get to previous menus. Also HATE that Pandora stations are not alphabetical, and don't like all the large icons - takes too long to find anything. Tried to show a family member how great it was (or used to be), but only succeeded in thoroughly confusing him. This is the first update we've had a problem with. PLEASE FIX!!!!!

Absolutely hilarious. You can't truly be serious???? That was a good one. Can't stop laughing......

Let's ride around in horse and carriage as well why don't we??? LOL!!!

I’m not sure that this is entirely fair, as to their great credit, Sonos got so much right at the very beginning.

I’m not sure which version they were at when I bought into this around 2009, but I remember how incredibly usable the CR200 software was. You could give it to anyone and they could instantly find their way around it. Even today It still looks good, and it is not old fashioned / quaint or outmoded — so the horse / carriage comparison is a bit off.

There isn’t a huge amount that the later versions do that the older versions didn’t (a few things log course, Truesoumd comes to mind) — the main thing any controller has to do is find a song, pick a room and play. That’s the bread and butter of iit —- nothing earth shattering. But you can’t give v8 to someone without showing them around. I know —- I’ve tried it.

So, you’d think having got it so good at the beginning, by version 8 they would have further refined it to perfection. Personally I would rather have the CR2000 circa 2009 than v8. It is by every usability criteria a far far better product.
