Battery life on my 2 Roams is nowhere near the advertised 10 hours.

Took them fully charged to the park on Sunday and got approximately 90 minutes of play out of them on Bluetooth before they stopped working. The volume was even kept low (around 40%) so as not to disturb other picnickers. My phone was still at 74% charge when the Roams (both of them) died.

Sorry but this is a big fail for Sonos. They made false promises about this device and they are charging considerably more than competitor's products that deliver better performance.

Can no longer recommend the Roam, and it's a shame because I have a LOT of Sonos products.

It says it’s offline.

Return it and let them know why.

Ok thanks everyone I am returning and maybe replace and try again.

But as stated a couple times, this deal at Costco only came with the wireless pad and does not separate from the pad. It's the exact wireless cable they sell on Sonos site.

I'll update this after I replace. I stopped charging at 91 percent after 11 hours on the triangle base. Turned off and trusting Costco will come through as they usually do with returns.

Ok this is my last go - Take another look at the charger pad on the Sonos website via the link you provided earlier - it’s power block is totally separate to the actual cable and pad and you can use it with a USB to USB-C cable, instead of the charger pad. It will charge the Roam more than twice as fast.

The USB-C cable should be in your Roam box, but if not, then use any standard USB to USB-C cable for fast-charging its battery.

@JimmyJet77 I see that 10 of the 13 reviews for the Roam on Crutchfield are 4- and 5-star reviews. Seems like most Roam customers are satisfied.

So my sonos roam is now on its official charger stand.

Has been for a couple of weeks

Since then its not moved

Ive reverted to my ue wonderboom for a portable bluetooth speaker.

So the roam cost £160 The charger cost £40.

So total cost is £200. For that price id rather have got another sonos one instead. And £20 to spare. And have had a better stationary speaker.

The roam just works as stationary speaker now for me.

Its not worth buying. The battery drain is so bad.

Hopefully this thread is a warning to other sonos owners not to get the roam.

Bitterly disappointed

My Roam played for 8 hours and 30 minutes. That's okay with me due to the 10 hours it should manage.

Same issue here. Every day for the last few weeks the battery drains overnight. Is there still no fix?

I like the Roam a lot bit this is unnacceptable.

Have you considered completely shutting off the Roam so the battery doesn’t drain overnight?

I have not experienced battery drain in standby mode because I turn mine off.   However,   even turned off,  the battery was completely drained after 4 days .. to the point where i had to let the Roams charge for 20 minutes before they even turned on..  There must be some kind of background drain even when supposedly turned off ..   I suspect that ‘off’ is not really off but has some kind of process running in the background .. or there’s a bug in the soft ‘off’ switch function.

Hi everyone,

I received my Sonos Roam yesterday and I am quite concerned by the battery drain on standby mode.

My roam is losing about 10% every hour on standby, which brings us to 10hours but I was expecting 10 hours in playing mode.

Should I be concerned by those stats are it was the expected consumption?

Thank you 🙂!

HI there. You will find that when you switch your sonos off,  you have to hold the button for at least 10sec for it to turn off completely.  When you just hold for 2 or so seconds it switches off but on standby mode

I’m having the same issue. I’ve hardly used it and the battery is down 50% in 24 hours. I thought standby mode was up to 10 days? This is not even close. Something is obviously wrong.

Hold button for 10 seconds. You will hear a different tone. Then it's switched off correctly.

RETURNING TO CRUTCHFIELD - Charged unit to 100% and played it for 20 minutes - battery life now  shows 77%!  That’s 1% of life per minute!  So you can play up to 100 minutes! Yay! Brilliant design Sonos! Your dev team are geniuses! Congratulations on this triumph of the 21st century!

After disabling almost everything (Google assistant, trueplay or whatever it's called, etc) the standby time is not nearly as terrible. Haven't charged it since I woke up and have played music intermittently and it's at around 88 percent. If it can last 3-4 days with this activity, I think this will be fine.

I got mine at launch and battery is worse than ever.

Do you think sonos would exhange it for a sonos play one if i pay the diff.

I really hate this speaker. I bought it as a portable but as mentioned before i bought the base too and its on there pretty much all of the time. Wish i got another play one instead of this

Suggest those who worry about battery drains just simply power off the ROAM completely… I have got both of my ROAM (white and black) last week and charged them on Sunday, added them to my existing system and then powered them off completely… A bit busy last 2 days so I just played with them again last night (so it’s over 48 hours since powered off), and the battery level was 99% when I put them on again…

Of course it takes some seconds for the speakers to start up and get ready but I think it’s much better to place them into sleep mode.

I think others, like me, are experiencing severe battery drain with the Roam turned off (ie. power button held for 5secs.  Out of curiosity, can I ask what you use to charge yours?  I wonder if it's the method of charging that’s having an effect here?  Thanks.

My Roam was fully charged overnight, turned on and in standby since 8am this morning (6 hours ago) and has only 47% battery life. I didn’t play music or use it once.

Hi, I was having the same issue and spoke to someone at Sonos, it was because I was only putting it in sleep mode which still connects to WiFi and checks for updates etc so will drain the battery. Hold the off button for five seconds which will power it off. I did this last night and the battery was still on 99% this morning. Hope this helps.

Consider yourself fortunate then. I fully powered mine off last Sunday and it had easily 2/3rds charge. Tried powering it on just now - completely dead. I’m going to re-test this but if it does the same again I’m tempted to send it back. It’s not what was described / advertised.

Annoyingly I had to migrate to Sonos S2 app to get it to work too…

Also anyone managed to get it to work with the Sonos App while out and about? It seems that this functionality and Alexa are confined to when you’re at home and connected to your WIFI only - bit of a shame that.

I’ve just experience this issue over last two weeks. Charge roam on weekend , used for a few hours and powered down by holding down button on rear for at least 5 seconds. Not used at all during each weekday and then when I attempt to switch on again following weekend I discover it will not switch on and needs charged again. Not had this issue with my old bose Bluetooth speaker which has reliably worked for many years without this type of battery drain issue. As a long standing satisfied  Sonos user that has bought more than 10 products I’m slightly astounded that sonos have released a new product with such a glaring and basic issue that should have been discovered with elementary product testing.

My Roam loses all battery power in one week when fully off. That is absurd! 10 hours of use? Never!

This is very unlikely. If the Roam is shut off completely, you should only be losing 1%-2% of battery charge per day. You are probably putting the Roam to sleep/standby mode which allows the battery to continue to drain when not in use and for the Roam to wake up anytime you access the Sonos app. Shut off the Roam completely by pressing and holding down the power button for 5 seconds until you hear a chime.

I also find that it drains when fully turned off.

Exactly what I’m finding after several weeks testing this with 5-6 day gaps of roam full powered down.

@GuitarSuperstar I also have this exact same issue and agree with @JimmyJet77 and am not at all satisfied with roam product considering the appalling battery drain issue when fully powered off.

How exactly are you powering off the Roam? When it’s fully powered off, you should only experience 1%-2% battery drain per day.

By holding down rear button for at least 5 seconds. I have specifically tested this issue over last two weekends by fully charging , using for 1-2 hours and then fully powering down for 5-6 days until following weekend. When I try and switch back on I discover that unit is fully discharged. I am now charging again (till 100% charge) and going to repeat same test next week.

When you power off the Roam, does the Roam show as “Offline” when you open the Sonos app?

No, it does not show up at all on sonosapp at that point. Only shows as offline when I put it into sleep mode.

I would perhaps take a couple of system diagnostic reports and try to show the battery depletion over a certain period of time (several days), make a note of all references related to those reports and then contact Sonos Support via this LINK.

I have two Roams that I use at Home, or when travelling. When I put those into standby/sleep mode, their batteries each last about 5-6 days in that state, but if they are powered off completely, then they each only lose around 2% per day battery and so easily last several weeks when held in that mode.

If your Roam is discharging within a week and you are quite sure it’s powered off completely, then it’s perhaps best to get the matter checked out by the Staff.

I would perhaps just sell it and buy the One, that seems to me to be the easiest solution.

I mostly only use the Sonos Qi charger for overnight charging - otherwise I use the same power adapter with the USB-C cable that came with the Roam, instead of the Pad, as that fast-charges the speaker.

I get approximately 10 hours of playback from each full charge.

If I power off the speaker (not standby) it loses about 1% or 2% per day on average, which is the going rate for a li-ion type battery.

Same issue for me. This product is utterly useless when it is not able to hold a charge in standby mode. I would recommend Sonos make the following changes:

  • Figure out and fix why battery standby is not holding out for more than two days. It must make regular wifi wake-up pings which are battery hawks. I’m okay if it takes 30 seconds for the speaker to wake up. Add this in the app: your speaker will start playing with 30 seconds.
  • Be honest with your customers that this speaker is best kept on a wireless charger for home standby wifi use.
  • Add a setting to automatically turn the speaker of when for example 50% battery level is reached in standby. At least this leaves me enough to still grab it for on to go use when I forgot to keep it on the charger. This should be easy to add.
