Hi @sdtheclub

Actually mine turns itself back on after holding the power button for 5 seconds when on the wireless charger. I did do the hard shut down before going to bed and the next morning it had lost 5% in 9 hours.

The Roam will always power on while charging. We recommend you either leave it on charge until you take it somewhere, or power off when you take it off charge until you wish to use it. Sleep mode isn’t intended to preserve as much battery charge as possible, but to preserve some when not actively in use that would be lost otherwise.

I guess mine is broken and needs to go back because it has never turned itself back off unless the battery is dead.

Hi @Brewski

Unfortunately the same, I really would like to avoid returning and love everything else about it. However, if a portable speaker can’t be fully charged and ready to go when you need it, it is pointless. Please add a setting to toggle the auto-on feature and I’ll end up using this thing everywhere.

I’m glad to hear that you enjoy your new Roam! There already is a setting for this - it’s called Off.

Wow, so helpful Corry.  Great work.

I apologise if I sounded glib, but I was serious. As I mentioned in later post, “We recommend you either leave it on charge until you take it somewhere, or power off when you take it off charge until you wish to use it. Sleep mode isn’t intended to preserve as much battery charge as possible, but to preserve some when not actively in use that would be lost otherwise.” I should have mentioned that in my reply to you, however.

I understand, I did read the whole chain before becoming involved, but nothing has worked including the 5 second hold.  I’ll fully charged mine, then held power for 5 seconds to fully power down and it appeared to...next morning I was at 35%.

Just to clarify, it was off the charger overnight before you checked it the next morning?

Correct.  Set it up, charged to 100%, used it over the course of one day down to below 10% (worked great in both Wifi and Bluetooth), charged it up to 100%, held power for 5 seconds and put away.  Grabbed it the next day and it was ~35%.  I’m planning on removing from system and setting up again.

Hi Everyone!

First, I want to reiterate what has already been explained here on this thread:

  • When using WiFi, the Roam will always use some power whether on or sleeping. We recommend you leave it charging when connected to WiFi.
  • The Roam, once turned off, should not turn on again spontaneously unless you charge it - if your Roam turns itself on from an Off state without being connected to a charger, please contact technical support.
  • The battery life of the Roam can vary according to some factors (like router settings, temperature or distance), but if you feel your battery is draining faster than it should, please contact technical support
  • Sleep mode is intended to save some battery power, not reserve all of it for when you take the Roam out. If your Roam is not going to be charging immediately before you take it somewhere, turn it off.

The Roam is a Sonos speaker, first and foremost. It has the option to run Alexa or Google Assistant and maintains a WiFi connection - unlike every other Bluetooth speaker out there with the exception of the Move - and thus uses more power than a typical portable BT speaker.

It is a new product, however, so issues are going to happen, at least for some. This is why, if you’re not satisfied, we’d very much like you to contact our technical support team. The Roam logs many details about it’s power mode, battery levels and other information - we can tell if it’s not performing as expected and then move on to a solution for you. If we don’t have a number of cases reporting such issues, and data collected from them, we can’t move forward to resolving them.

The majority of the posts here on this thread were describing battery drain using sleep mode, which is expected (though shouldn’t be excessive) and not likely to change, as people expect certain things from their Sonos system, of which a Roam is a part. Those experiencing a Roam that is Off turning On (when not connected to a charger), or an Roam that is Off draining it’s battery are outside cases and should really, as I have said, get in touch with technical support - and I do apologise to those who are experiencing this and read my earlier remark, but in the vast majority of cases, sleep is often confused with Off (we went through all of this with the Move too).

I really cannot reiterate enough that if you are unhappy with the Roam battery performance, please get in touch with technical support - they have the tools to ascertain if there’s a problem, or just a misunderstanding.

@Corry P , Sonos claim a battery life of upto 10 days when in sleep mode for the Roam.  Is that in a scenario where it is in a location with other Sonos speakers but neither they nor the App are never used?  As the drain while in proximity to an activated Sonos App appears to be far in excess of 10% a day, what is the environment the Roam would need to be in in order to get this Standby life?  If it's not near other speakers, users may as well fully power off instead and get much less drain?

The important point here is “up to”. The actual battery life (each charge, not the total lifespan) depends on a lot of factors, but one of the most important is battery temperature. Another is - yes - app and other speaker activity. Even the IP address lease time set on your router has an effect. Much like the quoted fuel efficiency of a car or the battery life of a laptop, the figure quoted is an upper limit - you will not see it go beyond the quoted figure, and the quoted figures generally rely on ideal conditions.

I don’t currently know the specific conditions under which the “10 days” figure was reached, but I can reach out and try to find out.

If you power off your Roam, the battery’s charge will last a lot longer, but it will not react to the app and needs physical interaction to turn on (button press or charger connected). Therefore sleep mode is for when you want to be able to play music to the Roam without touching it, but there is a power price to pay for this functionality - how can it react to the app without a functioning WiFi connection and CPU usage?

Personally, I would suggest the following:

  • If you’re not near a power supply (and therefore probably not near WiFi either), you should turn your Roam off when not using it - there’s no advantage to having it sleeping in this situation, other than how quickly you can get it playing again.
  • If you are near a power supply, (and therefore possibly connected to WiFi), you may as well charge it so you have maximum playing time for later, when there is no power. There is no direct connection from the USB socket or the Qi induction coil to the battery - the charging is controlled by software and you will not damage your Roam or it’s battery by leaving it on charge.
  • When you’re out and about, and are stopping playback and putting your Roam in your bag, for example, but plan on using the Roam again soon, put it to sleep so the buttons don’t get pressed by objects in your bag and so you don’t need to wait for it to boot up again when you bring it back out. As it’s a short time, the power usage difference between sleep and off will be negligible, compared to the convenience of being able to get it playing again in a few seconds.

Same issue here and is very annoying. Fully charged the Roam night before and next day it’s 35%. Yes it turns in anytime you use another Sonos speaker, even changing songs or pausing them. This is ridiculous. Love the sound and functionality of the Sonos products but this seems to be a miss. Should have the ability to fully keep it off and function as designed for a moveable speaker. Defeats the purpose of having it in a ready state to take with you when you have to find an outlet to charge it within an hour or so. Needs to be fixed with an update if possible or going to return and get another brand. Never had an issue with my Boom speakers. Sonos sounds amazing, wish the function was the same.

You can completely power it off by long pressing the power button for around 5 seconds… I did that when it’s fully charged on Sunday and put it on again yesterday (that is over 48 hours later), and the battery level was 99%.

Actually mine turns itself back on after holding the power button for 5 seconds when on the wireless charger. I did do the hard shut down before going to bed and the next morning it had lost 5% in 9 hours.

I have to agree completely.  I would not have bought this Roam product if it constantly did this.  Why is there a “hard turn off” feature if you hold the button for 5 seconds, and then it turns on again?  Our household has over 10 Sonos speakers--they are not cheap.  A software upgrade to the Roam so it STAYS POWERED OFF after 5 seconds, and ensures it STAYS OFF until I want to use it again and it is at the relative same charge as when I powered it off is NOT TOO MUCH TO ASK.

Hellbat...I was still having the same issue yesterday afternoon where my Roam was still losing battery after the 5 second hold to turn “Off”.  However, I removed the device from my system and set it back up again from the beginning.  Now my Roam is functioning as its supposed to...if I fully charge it, then unplug and hold power button for 5 seconds, it will fully shut off until I manually turn it back on.  Tried it this morning and it was at 99%, seems to be working correctly now.

I’m struggling how to turn it off . If I press once it goes to sleep mode if I press snd hold a few seconds it goes in to blue light mode.

This is so incredibly annoying. I don’t ever use the Sonos app and my roam continues to turn on by itself. I have to charge it every few days because it dies even though it’s not being used. Really a bummer of a “feature”.

If your Roam turns on by itself or battery is draining without explanation, this my be the reason.   If you put roam to sleep (single short press of the power button) your Roam will turn itself back on when you open your Sonos app.  If you want to turn off your Roam hold the power button for 5 or 6 seconds.   Battery drainage problem solved!!!

I’m glad to hear that you enjoy your new Roam! There already is a setting for this - it’s called Off.

This “off/sleep” distinction is non-obvious from a UX perspective.  When you press the on/off button everything appears “off”.  I’d advise having some LED that shows that it’s in a low-power sleep state vs off.  I’ve spent several days since getting this device trying to determine why every time I went to use it, the battery was significantly reduced.

I’m in and out of the Sonos app regularly and didn’t realize that was triggering this to turn it back on.

For the Move this makes sense as it’s more of a hybrid device that is portable but not really a travel device.  It’s more likely you will be sitting in a room and want to push music to it (plus the bigger battery.

For the Roam, as someone else noted, I want this to replace my UE Boom, which means, I charge this, I turn it off, and I leave it in my backpack for when I’m out and about.  If I’m using it, my expectation is that I’d turn it on to make it available to use.

As a guess, you’re putting the Roam in ‘standby’ and not actually turning it off.

Not true, mine and many other Roams turn themselves back on even after holding the button for 5-6 seconds. The only way I have found to keep the battery charged is to keep it hardwired to the charger. Even the wireless charging feature turns off once the battery is fully charged and then allows the battery to drain even though it’s on the charger.

“When the Roam or Move powers on this way and is not targeted for playback, it will be in a low power state, so battery drain will be kept to a minimum. Rest assured, you shouldn’t see any negative effects from the Roam waking like this.”

@James L. I have to disagree a bit here… if you enable an assistant on the Roam it wakes up enough to actually respond to those commands. I only noticed my Roam kicked back on when I said “ok Google” (expecting my Google Home to respond). In my mind this is a “negative effect” because A. That means it’s definitely using more battery and B. I don’t want it to hijack Google assistant call outs. Perhaps the mic needs to also be disabled when put in sleep mode and only woken up when the device is brought out of sleep or “targeted for playback”.

Morning, just chucking in my thoughts.

Roam was at 58% charge last night. Put it on the QI pad and switched it OFF (not sleep). It stayed off. Went to bed a couple of hours later and it was still off (QI pad showed it was charging).

Middle of the night I got called out by work - noticed the Roam was on - single white light, QI pad still flashing its charging. Took it off the pad and switched it OFF.

This morning I switched it back on and its at 46% charge.

Not very good is it?

Hey

I have to say that I'm also generally confused by how this roam should be used. Sound and design is great but it haven't really fit my expectations in term of mobility.

The major issue I see with the off button, is that it is so easy to turn it back on in a bag. For exemples, you would like to charge it to 100% before a trip. Take it from charger and turn it off. Put into a bag and off we go. After a day in the bag, battery is down, system must have been turned on by touching the 1tap button in the bag.

I would need a physical switch to turn it off. Then there's no question or hesitation, off is off.

At home, I drained it down a couple of times in the first days by just not understanding how it worked. Now it's always on the wireless charger but that's somehow a bit weird to do.

Not being able to quickly connect it to a different wifi (guest or friend's house) would be my second issue but that's another topic.

Keep the power button pressed until you hear the ‘descending’ power-off tone about 5+ seconds

Is there a sweet spot as if I hold it, briefly it goes in sleep mode , too long it shows the blue light

I gave up on using the wireless charger because I have pretty much the same problem as you. Mine charges to 100% using the wireless charger but then it shuts off and because the roam loves to turn itself on and stay on the battery is dead before you know it. Leaving the roam plugged in all the time sucks but I don’t have much of a choice if I want it to be fully charged and ready for use.

Exactly. The only solution is to leave the unit plugged in. It is my understanding it is not a good idea to leave rechargeable batteries plugged in all the time; shortens their life. Not good on a $170 speaker. Power Off should mean OFF, not standby. This is really frustrating SONOS because in all other respects I love the Roam. I really don’t want to return it.

Userlevel 7

How are you using the Roam? If as a BT device make sure your source is not sending audio. If on Wi-Fi have you haven’t set it to PULL audio from other Sonos.

Userlevel 1

Wifi.  It is set to pull audio from other Sonos.  I have two Beams and a One.  I thought that is how I needed to set it up if I wanted to link the speakers occasionally. Should I change it?

Userlevel 2

Same problem when I set it on a Qi device.
