Just got my Sonos gear (1 x connect, 2 x connect:amp).
This was the first feature I was looking for.
The control software looks well polished, so I would expect a feature like this out of the box.
Same goes with me! Would be great to be able to do this.

Have been trying to find a way to accomplish this. Basically, one sonos speaker to be part of multiple "groups" (or scenes). Hopefully this will be resolved soon (I can't believe it has taken over 3 years), especially given the fact that Google Home is allowing the creation of groups. Instead of having to "check/uncheck" speakers, one would "check/uncheck" groups (assuming one has created/selected the speaker that would be part of each group). The hardware (speakers) are very good but the software seems severely lacking. I'm hoping that the Google Home competition and the Echo/Alexa integration will force some advancement in the area of software.
Ditto. Amazed this hasn't been developed yet. Do it already!

The whole ecosystem needs a revamp as it is in danger of falling behind in terms of functionality. The basic premise is great, and the sound is awsome, but lack of responsiveness and innovation in new features is telling of a company resting on its laurels. I love Sonos and the whole concept, but after spending £1000s on 16 devices and spending time in this forum I can’t help feeling that wihout a change in their approach the investment won’t continue as other options will materalose which adress all the gaps in functionality. There as SO many software enhancements that could be made to improve thw flexibility and usability if the current hardware simply being ignored. Which is a shame. Mapybe after the IPO they’ll be aquired by someone who has a vision to expand and truly innovatebeyond the basics that have a pretty solid foundation. I for one will be looking to replave my 3 month old 5.1 Sonos system with something else. Which will mean I won’t be soending a penny more with Sonos unless they are going to present something WOW on 6/6 😞

So really what is the problem here Sonos? I have 7 speakers in different rooms . All I want is the ability to have different groupings . We just added bedroom speaker and noww I’m in the doghouse because twice I missed ungrouping bedroom from the speaker group..  y wife was sleeping in because she was working late shift..this is a 6 year old request. Can some one explain in layman terms why this is not available . As many have said this seems like a no brainer. Don’t get me wrong love the system hence 7 speakers but come on man fess up what is the problem?

Sonos never comments on future functionality.  Not what you want to hear, but that’s the case.

And in my experience, those who use the words “no brainer” about software development know nothing about software development, and even less about the specific software they want to be developed.  Been in Software Engineering for 30 years, not once have I ever looked at some other company’s software product and said the words “no brainer”.  I’m simply not arrogant enough to think I know the underlying design, although I can probably make a more educated guess than 90% of the population at large (and still, I don’t say it).

+1.  This is a much needed feature that I know can be done, as a third party provider created an App a few years ago that works with the HomeSeer home controller software to do just this.

So all was well in our household, until Sonos introduced the Playbar and stereo pairing of Play units.

The third party App supplier has unable to spend the required time updating the App for the linking / unlinking of any Zones (rooms) with a stereo pair in it!

I think Sonos should think about making this idea mainstream and remove the need for third party Apps to create a workaround.

So.... Six years later, still no response from Sonos in this? Apart from the fact that as many have stated before this should be pretty basic functionality, and I have not seen a real reason for not implementing this (there are several different solutions to the "one player is in more than one group" issue) the complete lack of response on the issue is quit baffling.

Can anyone comment on the availability of this feature on competetor's products like HEOS?
I want this, plus I want a roving zone which moves with me as I move about the house.  My iPhone is usually with me, so define "me" as the iPhone.  The Sonos App on the iPhone can then determine were I am based on all that secret google/nsa code which determines my precise strikable location in 3 dimensions based on bluetooth and wifi and {3,4}G triangulation, plus sonar from all the fracking-induced tremors, so that all speakers within some distance of me are in my group as I move about.

Once you have that working, it should, of course, take into account my wife's iPhone for the same purpose, assuming we start out in the same group at one time.

conflicting groups will be resolved in my favour, natch.
Please add this feature and allow us to choose predefined speaker groupings. With the summer months upon us the constant speaker "group changing" with the deck speakers and inside speakers is brutal. Its hard to believe with all the technical challenges Sonos has conquered they have not addressed this issue. Please help !!!!
Great idea!!
agreed! multiple groups would be great and the ability to switch up groups w/o having to stop the music.
IH !
Does this feature is in the way ? Thanks
Just bought Sonos and this is the first thing I see lacking from the current software. We need way to have multiple groups and the ability adding any device to any groups.

Great Idea!!
We bought a bunch of Play:3 and Play:5 speakers to implement a public intercomm/bell system for a new grade school. It work great when all are grouped together, but it is a really a limitation to not also have the ability to group rooms in their own sub-groups, because they are already part of the main group. Please consider adding this feature soon!

I need this too. Using Play 5 as a TV soundbar and have a Play 1 in kitchen and one in bedroom. Would like a bedroom and kitchen group for morning alarm, and tv and kitchen for evening TV. Having to re-do the group and volumes each time is annoying - please let us save preset group/volume combinations!
I completely agree - I'm somewhat astounded that the Sonos system doesn't already handle this nicely... I use the Android and PC controllers rather than the Mac controller, but I imagine and hope that if it gets sorted in one of them it would be sorted in all of them! And I hope it does soon!
I agree, having the ability to create different groups would make this much more useful.  A Party Mode is nice, but often need different modes for different events such as Dinner party, cocktail party, etc where there are a different grouping of speakers.  To make this more user friendly without requiring users to setup group each time would be a great feature to have.
Please add this to the next release. It can't be that hard and would add tremendous value.
Would also be very interested in this obvious feature. Is it on the way?

This is an absolute must have.  User friendly room presets are such a major part of multiroom audio that I really can't believe the feature does not already exist.
Please build this feature. Its a must and so obvious.
I think this goes deeper than just preset room configurations - what it also needs to is adjust the source for the configurations. I have a soundbar and subwoofer hooked up to my tv. When I'm watching tv I would love it if there was one button I could push that would switch off all other components and switch the living room to "TV" -In this way. the presets would be more than just room configurations - it should also control what gets played. For instance a preset called "morning coffee" might switch certain units to a particular radio station or playlist. A party one might turn all the units on music library and start playing a random selection from another playlist.
This would be a great feature to have. I have six players and adding a seventh, and routinely switch between configs on a daily basis between listening to music, vs. watching TV, vs. just a few players in the kitchen. It's a bit of a pain to keep adjusting the volumes on each player to get the right settings when I need to regroup, or ungroup, them.

Also, I'd love to have the TV watching surround sound mode go back to the previous config. once the TV is turned off. It's nice to have the TV go to surround sound when the TV starts. If this feature exists, then if someone could let me know that would be great!

There's another thread that talks to the ideas in this thread very well. I believe these discussions should be joined together: https://ask.sonos.com/sonos/topics/presets-or-audio-scene
