Radio skipping backwards - BBC radio repeats

I am getting the same BBC radio skipping issue which started a couple of months ago. Have informed BBC but they don't seem to think it's their problem. Is Sonos still working with the BBC on this? Very annoying

I also have this issue and after seeing the message from @Xander P i contacted the BBC today. This is their response:

Thanks for contacting BBC Sounds support about your Sonos device skipping backwards when listening to BBC streams.

This has now been confirmed to be a Sonos fault rather than a BBC issue. You should check out their help forums where they have updated some of the threads to show this.

I did a search but have not found any reference this updated status - is anybody able to point me to where the threads have been updated?

Xander P’s message still seems by far the most plausible explanation here - I’ve had the skipping issue for ages across all BBC streams and it’s absolutely what you’d expect when an HLS stream is generated incorrectly. Not all HLS players are created equal though, so it could be a subtle issue with the way the BBC streams are generate breaking playback on Sonos. I agree it’d be interesting to see what updated threads the BBC are referring to here, though.

A week ago I switched from tunein to Radioplayer to see if the repeating was any better. It’s just as bad with Radioplayer on both Radio 2 and 4. Will try myTuner Radio to see if it’s any better although judging by the comments in this thread I don’t hold out much hope.

Does anyone know whether any of the technicians from Sonos and/or the BBC are actually working on this issue?  It’s getting particularly irritating when trying to listen to the news?  If so, will they give us an update here please?

I raised a call and there was a lot of discussion and several diagnostics submitted, the final answer was

""thank you for Contacting Sonos Customer Care again, and for the information you provided!

We have double-checked the diagnostic you sent us, and unfortunately, the issue seems not to be a Sonos-related one: it occurs when playing BBC through Sonos Radio, TuneIn, and Radioplayer, but there are no skips or delays when you are playing something else, for instance, Spotify.

Unfortunately, at this point our troubleshooting steps will not solve the issue - though, we log it, and try to find a solution with BBC.

Thank you for your understanding!"

now, if they are any updates from either/both it would be good to see but... Silence...

Just to add to this - I have had this problem for some time, so would be interested in the outcome of any investigation and fix by Sonos.

@cwarrent which service are you using TuneIn?

Just to add - when I use Google Home to start the station it seems to default to TuneIn even when that service is not setup in Sonos.

Could it be that via the newly updated app and changes to services I’m now using Sonos Radio and not TuneIn to play Radio 2?

I know TuneIn is for sure used via Google assistant so if the app isn’t using TuneIn then this could narrow the issue.

@cwarrent and @neilandjan .

May I ask if you have the BBC Sounds Skill for Alexa installed? (Although I am not sure whether this is relevant!)

(I know nothing about Google Assistant - is there something comparable to the Alexa Skill?)

I’ve never used Alexa (as I preferred Google Assistant) but I get the feeling the issue arises using both assistants from replies within this post.

Thanks for reply - I edited my post while you were sending yours - is there anything from the BBC you can install on Google Assistant?

After experiencing the skipping/repeating problems with Tunein and Radioplayer I switched to myTuner radio two months ago and I haven’t experienced any skipping/repeating at all since then on either Radio 4 or Radio 2.

Same here, switched to Tunein rather than mytuner or radioplayer to stop the message saying that the stream will be unavailable from 22nd March only to now have problems with 10 second or so repeat of dialogue or music, very frustrating

I have more or less the same issue, but I’m listening to the Danish radio station DR P4 via TuneIn.
Every 15-30 minutes it skips back about 30 minutes. If I stop and and restart the stream it gets back to “now”.
I have a Sonos One and 3 SYMFONISK, using Google Assistant. I can restart the stream by pressing a button on the speakers, the S2 app on the phone/computer and and IKEA remote control.
It can’t be a issue with BBC when it happens for me listening to a Danish Radio Station.

But it could be an issue with the stream, and it doesn't sound identical to the BBC issue.

Does your problem occur whether you start the stream originally using voice or from the Sonos app?

After several months of experiencing a similar issue, and trying to resolve it myself (ie by moving wireless channels, moving access points etc), I’ve discovered I’m not alone.

I’m 99% sure this isn’t down to my wireless network - 3 Sonos One’s all connected wirelessly to a Mesh network.  They all get a decent signal and my 70Mbps broadband is pretty reliable.

I have a daily Sonos alarm which plays Radio X on Sonos Radio - so not a BBC problem.  Most days I experience the ‘rewind’ issue a few times in the couple of hours listening (and at that time of day, the broadband isn’t used for much else).  Slightly more rarely, maybe once a week, the radio just stops playing and I have to restart it in the app.

The other thing that happens - maybe unrelated but in case it helps - I often join another Sonos to listen to the same radio, but the “secondary” Sonos occasionally gets disconnected for a time, like it’s not receiving from the first even though they’re really not far apart.

Will gladly submit a diagnostic but thought I’d share details up front to add a different setup/radio station into the mix.

But it could be an issue with the stream, and it doesn't sound identical to the BBC issue.

It might not be 100% identical but it still skips back. So I think it’s kinda related.

It doesn’t matter how I start the stream. It happens whether I use the app, the button on the speakers, the remote control or voice control via Google Assistant.
Today the radio started two hours ago and it have happened 3 times.

I thought that GA did NOT use TuneIn - what makes you say you are sure it does?

Edit - I mean not for BBC stations, at least.

I suggest you submit a system diagnostic after it has happened and call Sonos with the confirmation number.

Ok, I’ll try that. It just happened again a few minutes ago.

Thanks for the help.

@cwarrent and @neilandjan .

Yes. I have the BBC Sounds skill installed in Alexa.

N.B. I am still seeing NO repeats whilst starting playback via the Sonos app and not using Alexa, through MyTuner.

Exactly the same problem for me. Switched between Sonos Radio and TuneIn to play BBC Radio 2. Both skip. Been happening for months.

Agree with the view that Sonos engineers discussing this with engineers at BBC is going to be a more productive conversation.

This has been driving me crazy. Finally got round to looking into it to see if it was a fault with the unit, which is fairly new. Please push the BBC to sort it out Soon.

Just to add to the confusing mix of backward skipping issues on BBC radio streams, here’s my experiences.

Using Alexa voice control I have experienced skipping when using Radio Player and the BBC Sounds app. This morning used the Sonos app to listen to BBC Radio 4 via Radio Player and a backward skip happened within the first minute. So in my case it’s happening with and without voice control!

Same for me but only on my new Beam and on BBC Radio 5 Live. It regularly skips backwards about 20-25 seconds. This doesn’t happen on any of my other Alexa devices or on my older Beam in another room...

@Xander P - so are you saying that this is something people will experience whether listening to Sonos or via any other (internet radio) device?  Or is it possible that it could only happen via Sonos?

I can’t help wondering if this is linked to the general ‘strangeness’ that exists in the relationship between the BBC, TuneIn and Sonos (and maybe throw Alexa in there, too).  The BBC withdrew its stations from Tunein a while back because it really wants everyone to listen through BBC Sounds.  However, it has allowed Sonos and some other ‘third party’ music players to continue to play a URL directly, with that URL supplied by TuneIn.  Could this be in any way relevant?

If the HLS stream is the problem, then some of the users who have posted on this thread may want to try using a non-HLS stream, which they can add as a manual radio station to Sonos.  This would be as an experiment and/or temporary workaround.  The following link has non-HLS streams that can be tried.

Frying pan … fire.  As others have found, this work-around takes you to a stream via TuneIn and so you get hourly messages letting you know that it won’t work after 21st March.  Is there any other way to add a streaming URL?  It doesn’t seem to be offered via RadioPlayer on the app, for example.

So I also get the BBC stations skipping backwards. I am using Alexa on Sonos and the TuneIn service. If I listen to the BBC Sounds app with my iPhone on WiFi, there is none of this skipping back. Could someone explain what is going on please, because from where I sit, the issue is with Sonos.
