And then there was this:

"Sonos quietly added microphones to its latest PLAY:5 speaker, but describes them as future-proofing for potential new features, and says that they're currently inactive."

+1. I use Echo so much more now vs my Sonos, and I have 8 Sonos speakers! With 2 echo pucks on order, I'm worried Sonos is on a sunset path...

Interesting, thanks Chicks for posting that.
Was playing with the free version of Talk to Sonos last night. Works fairly well. It would be pointless if I needed to launch the app or press a button to activate it, but it does have a continuous mode. So, I installed it on a docked Nexus 7, in continuous mode. Then started trying to control it from about 10 ft. away. Had to shout to be heard, but it was pretty good about understanding what I said. "Paula, radio KPLU", and she did. "Paula, playlist piano Jazz in Office". No problem.

Think I'll order an external mic, and see what happens. Maybe this one.

It looks like Sonos is going to build its own version of Alexa, not use Alexa Voice Services.. That's really sad.

I'm not sure how you got to that conclusion from the linked article. The author himself (after an admitted "wildest speculation" that Sonos teams up with Siri/Apple) states:

For Sonos, the answer's probably as simple as tightly integrating its speakers with the new Amazon Dot, or baking in the Alexa Voice Service as Invoxia did with the Triby.

At no point in the article does he say Sonos is "going to build its own version of Alexa".
Hi everyone. So I got my dot. Hooked it up to the play 5 with a line in cable, and it generally works well when I ask alexa something. The trouble is, that after Alexa responds, Sonos stays on the "line in" setting, and whatever was previously playing through sonos is no longer playing. Anyone out there have suggestions what to do, or is this a fix we just need to wait for from Sonos?

Just stumbled onto this . . .

Maybe there is some hope on the way for those of us that continue to hold out hope!

Sonos definitely needs a voice controller, call it the "Sonos Vox" and charge $149.95. Design it so you can set it on a coffee table and the user can change volume, play favorites, and change tracks with their voice

There, I did the tough part, now go make the product so I can buy it!

While I like @Steve's idea, perhaps price it at $99 and make it a white hockey puck that has location context (what zone it is in...)

LOVE my 14 zones of Sonos, but you've got to engage the voice/AI world.

Sonos have announced that they are already working on voice - we know no more beyond that.

I for one would be extremely unlikely to buy any additional hardware. At least whilst my fingers and legs still work!!

So I tried out Ryan's approach (https://github.com/rgraciano/echo-sonos). It took me all afternoon to set it up (it is not for the faint at heart) but I got it running. Because it the instructions included assumed many things that I didn't know, I had to figure a bunch of stuff out. I made some more detailed instructions here: https://howastute.blogspot.com/2016/07/sonos-control-with-amazon-echo-how-i.html

A HUGE thanks to Ryan for while I had to figure out a lot of the steps, I could NEVER have done it on my own.

It works pretty well. The main drawback is that it stops working whenever my computer goes to sleep or I'm logged out. So I ordered a raspberry pi to be a full time controller. I just need to find the time to set it up...

This is just too much trouble. I'm disappointed in a progressive company like Sonos not getting with the program. They should have been the first, not the last in integrating voice with their product. If they've already hired the voice engineers, it should not be that much effort to integrate with Alexa as a start for at least the basics.

Care to list another multi-room streamer manufacturer which announced their intent, never mind actually accomplished "integrating voice with their product"? No wait, let me answer that for you: There are none. Not Bose, not Samsung, not LG, not Denon, not Bluesound, nobody. Sonos is not only the first one, they are the only one.

No one seems to know for sure what the August 30th announcement is, but its encouraging to read speculation that it could involve Amazon Echo (Alexa). Keeping my fingers crossed!
Bump.

Any news about this integration??? Eager here to see and use these appliances together

They announced on August 30th that a full integration with Amazon Echo is coming. There will be a private beta later this year with a public release in 2017.

I am anxiously awaiting an opportunity to beta test. I was hoping the beta would be released this year but this year is almost over.
They move incredibly slowly. But first rule of private beta is u don't talk about it. It could be under way now. No way of knowing, unless you..... know.

You can use Yonami to voice control Sonos through Echo, I'm sure the official integration will be better though

It was announced that the private beta would be at the end of 2016, with a general release in 2017. No reason to think the public beta will see the light of day until well after the new year.

Ok, I'm reading about all these great plans they have to integrate Sonos with Alexa and how it's in a "private beta test".

Considering that the first thing I did when I got my brand new Echo over 2 years ago was to come here and post this topic letting them know these two products would work great together. Telling Sonos that this is a feature they needed and I wanted them to develop... Considering that (as far as I can tell) I was the first person to bring this idea to their attention, I've got one question...

Where was my private beta test invitation???
I don't believe there is yet any "super secret double probation" type of beta test. Could be wrong about that, possibly, but if there were, I'd suspect it was only employees at this point. I think the fasted method for us non-employees to be involved would be to sign up for the normal beta system. I suspect that would give us the earliest access.

Well it's a few years later and well into 2017 and still no real integration with Alexa. There were some vague promises with vague timelines. There were rumors about secret beta tests and possible release dates, but in the end it adds up to a big ol pile of jack squat.

Sorry guys, I don't think it's going to happen.

"Vague promises"? There was a major press release, several articles in trade magazines, interviews with the CEOs of both companies, a co-produced promotional video, and several updates here that the implementation is currently being worked on. This from a company that is usually very tight-lipped about current and future products.

I'm not sure you know what the term "vague" actually means. 😃

Vague, as in a lot of talk but nothing concrete. No date, no details, no results.

If you can tell me the exact release date, the features they're going to offer or even something showing us the progress to date, I'd love to see it. Point me to an article or the CEO interviews where they give the details.

"The implementation is currently being worked on" is the definition of a vague answer.
