Hello everyone Thanks for looking. Long post sorry.

I need some help as I’m stuck.
Here is my set up. Any questions or answers I would be grateful.I’ve set Questions in the post thanks.

TV MODEL LG OLED65CX5LB (2020) OLED HDR 4K.

Playstation 4 PRO, HDMI 1 (Changing to PlayStation 5 eventually, or New Xbox). BT Vision 4K HDMI 3.

Sonos Arc HDMI 2 eARC with Subwoofer Gen 3 and rear 1s.

(Note all HDMI1,2,3,4 settings are set to  BITSTREAM and not PCM) Atm.

TV Internal Apps ———-Straight to Sonos Arc from HDMI 2 eARC from TV

I can successfully get Atmos (over Dolby Digital Plus on Netflix etc), and Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Digital depending on movie or show.

For Atmos, the TV has has to be set to eARC button ON   and the DTV Audio set to AUTO or PASSTHROUGH (Both Work) PCM does not work. Obviously this a lossy format of Atmos and better with Blu Ray or Hard Disk I suppose. Q1 I’m assuming Blu Ray players can play Atmos movies to this soundbar if not encoded in DTS OR DTS-MA or you could choose Linear PCM with an update from Sonos as promised that came the other day.

For programmes streamed in Dolby Digital 5.1, the TV has has to be set to eARC button ON and the DTV Audio set to PASSTHROUGH gives you Dolby Digital 5.1 + Plus) If you switch it to a Auto, the signal becomes DOLBY DIGITAL MULTI CHANNEL PCM 5.1 (Somebody said  this is DOLBY MAT but I don’t know what that is).

Q2Which is better out I’ve the two in terms of fidelity? DD+ or DIGITAL MULTI CHANNEL PCM 5.1 (Dolby Mat?).Q3 Or would this LPCM change the effect of Netflix and TV Apps?

TV HDMI 1 (Bitstream selected) ——   PS4PRO

PS4 Pro set to HDMI out and either DTS Bitstream out or Dolby Digital (Bitsteam)and not PCM out (Other option). Both first options give same outcome.

Games

DTV AUDIO : AUTO
DIGITAL SOUND OUT: AUTO (Dolby Multi Channel PCM 5.1)
PASSTHROUGH: (2.0 Stereo)
PCM plays stereo but says Silence on Sonos Arc App.

So I only get it working with Auto, this must meet the TV is doing something with the input from PS4 PRO.

EARC has to be turned ON Position. Off gives No signal and  no sound.

On a Blu  Ray on PS4 PRo the disc was Jumanji  with sound formats DTS HD MA and Dolby Digital Laboratories.

I’ve set the PS4 up All three ways, bitstream DTS, bitstream Dolby Digital, and PCM. None of these work. The TV Was set up in all known configurations ive tried as I’ve explained. I even stopped disc and changed the options to output in all the options available. There were two on the PS4 PRO. Can’t remember what they were called but neither made a difference, and some on the disc menu. I now understand that we can change setting on PS4 PRO to LPCM. Q4 Is this what I need to do on Blu Ray?

I tried this on a ps4 pro game last night and was getting Dolby PCM Multichannel 7.1 Q5 Does anyone know what this is please?

The there was a 5.1 option in PS4 settings as it sounded wrong and I clicked this but I got now sound and has to choose bitstream again as I had it first set up and was getting Multichannel 5.1 again as I was before. I believe it was the same reading in the app. Q6 This seems to be a big problem has it been sorted or anything from Sonos?

HTV HDMI 2 eARC (Bitstream Selected)  ———————————————Sonos Arc by HDMI Sonos Arc Cable

TV HDMI 3 (Bitstream Selected)——

BT VISION 4K Ultra Box

Only Sound settings available on BT Vision, are  Stereo/Surround Sound. My setting is Surround Sound.

I’ve also registered with now tv for surround sound which was seperate and hidden away.

On BT my settings are DTV: AUTO
Digital sound out PASSTHROUGH

I get Dolby multi channel PCM 5.1

On AUTO This goes down to 2.0

I’ve not tried since the new PCM Settings on Sonos?

ALL ON eARC.

However, on BT ULTIMATE it gives me 2.0 on every setting I can possibly choose. This channel It’s meant to be the best in HDR and ATMOS. I phoned BT to get ATMOS but they said I can’t get it through eARC and only soundbars that you have HDMI inputs. This is getting worse. Q7 Can anyone help me on BT Ultimate channel Atmos sound? I believe BT Don’t Care. On the HD Channels I get 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus on my old Yamaha ysp2200 using pass through as its 1080p and on 4K ultimate on main box I get 2.0 mix ONLY.

TV HDMI 4  ——————— FREE

Let me know if you have any ideas. Particularly getting Blu rays to work abs what type I need to buy?

Q7 Do I need a special type of Blu Ray player that will decide things on the fly or should I wait till ARC update? I’m hoping the PS4 Pro will now work? Thanks  so much look forward to hearing from you all. I’m secretly hoping that 7.1 was a future speaker update haha. Just feel like I’ve spent so much money with little in return due to Sonos blocking or removing standard features.

if anyone can explain the points I’ve made and put me right I will gladly try and help others out too with my results. Best wishes Peter

Finally, also concerned about the PS5 Spatial sound rumours and how it runs on ARC and basically just getting my options right.

if anyone can guide me too optimal LG CX settings too I would appreciate that for picture too.

Hi @Babangida. thank you for reaching out to us, and welcome to the Sonos Community. We appreciate your detailed post describing your concern. Let me help you out with this.

The Sonos Arc can play Dolby Atmos audio. ARC and eARC are protocols responsible for sending audio over an HDMI cable to home theater sound systems like Sonos Arc. Sonos Arc must be connected to HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC to play any Dolby Atmos content. Not all TVs have HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC, so check your TV’s user manual to see which HDMI connections you have. Getting Dolby Atmos audio can also depend on the physical source device playing the content and the format or output must be set to one of our supported home theater audio formats.

McLPCM (Multi-Channel Pulse Code Modulation) is an uncompressed audio format that provides high-quality audio to our eARC supported home theater devices. Currently, the vast majority of devices support up to 8 channels LPCM (5.1 and 7.1 surrounds are the most common). A television with eARC is required to get McLPCM.

Blu-ray discs commonly use the DTS audio format which is not supported by Sonos. Some Blu-ray players and game consoles have the ability to transcode DTS into a format that Sonos supports, such as Dolby Digital 5.1. Consult your Blu-ray player’s manual or manufacturer for specific instructions and settings. You may also need to check this article about unsupported audio on your home theater speaker for reference.

Thankyou for this but I pretty much new this as i described in my post. However my blu ray on PS4 is playing in 7.1 or 2.0 only. There is no 5.1 as stated on the dvd box or the start page of the dvd. Is 7.1 multichannel classed as 5.1 Dolby digital? My PlayStation plays on both 5.1 Dolby digital and 7.1 multi channel but the game supports only 5.1? I’m really struggling to understand.

Hi @Babangida, thank you for your response and for updating us. Let me help you out with this.

Getting Dolby Atmos audio can also depend on the physical source device playing the content and the format or output must be set to one of our supported home theater audio formats. The source format should be the same format as the TV. If your PS4 is playing 7.1 and your TV only support  5.1 Dolby digital from this source, you need to change your PS4 format to 2.0. Please check out the community threads that we provided for your reference.
