Thinking about buying a speaker, but wonder how far I can walk away with my phones for example when I stream music.

Once the music has started, you can drop your phone in a blender if you like and it will carry on playing. Your phone is not used for the actual streaming (well, unless you stream files directly off of it). To use the app, your phone needs to be in range of your Wi-Fi network of course.
As stated, Sonos is not like Bluetooth. It streams directly from the source to the Sonos speaker, the only thing the phone/tablet does is tell it what to stream and display the results. So you really can leave the house, turn the phone off, or throw it in a blender and the music keeps streaming. One of the many advantages over Bluetooth (others include better sound, ability to play lossless files, multi-room sync).
