Hi Everyone

We moderators of the community - @Corry P@Jamie A & @Sotiris C. - wanted to take an opportunity to explain some of what is currently happening on the community.

First of all, we value all the feedback you are providing about the new Sonos App. We hear you. Feedback is coming in fast and thick, however - for understandable reasons - and to be frank, we are having trouble just keeping up with it all. For this reason, some topics that have not yet been replied to will go unanswered. We will, however, do our best to amalgamate some of these separate threads into bigger, related threads (such as one big thread for Alarm complaints and another for Queue Management) to be answered en-mass. The threads that are feedback on other aspects of the new app will be merged with this post.

Threads that describe issues such as missing rooms and app crashes (those that are not just feedback, in other words) will be answered, as will threads not relating to the new app in anyway, but these will take a bit longer than normal.

Please be aware that we are reading every post, we are recording and collating all feedback, and all of it will be passed over to the app software development team. In addition, we are doing our best to identify previously unidentified issues and report them to our technical teams.

We know many of you are concerned about certain features going missing, so let us take this opportunity to say that the following features are coming back:

  • Alarms management
  • Sleep timers
  • Queue management
  • Playlist editing

In addition and contrary to some speculation, local Music Library is not going anywhere, though SMBv1 support has been permanently removed. Local Music Library searching is something that is still being worked on.

We’d also like to thank everyone who has taken it upon themselves to help others here with their questions and concerns - we appreciate you all!

Thanks for listening - take care of yourselves, and each other.

After many months on the new app, I still cannot use it and have to resort to Alexa to play music in a specific room. It is appallingly unintuitive, even worse than snapchat. The Sonos S1 app was amazing, I got many of my friends to buy Sonos systems based on the ease of use and capabilities of the systems. Every subsequent update (I refuse to call it an upgrade) has degraded the usability and intuitiveness of the system to the point nobody in my house knows how to use it anymore, despite having owned and used the system daily for close to a decade.

I literally cannot select the room I am in and start music. I have to select another room, select my room, deselect the first room then click around and try and find some kind of music source. Its total f***ing garbage, you should be embarrassed and your UIX team needs to find a new line of work.

I find it very difficult to select various rooms and then when I do, it does not play the Playlist I had set for that room so eventually I give up. It shouldn’t be like this. But the app looks more modern and more with the times. While looking for other alternatives, there were one or two apps that kind of resembled the mess the Sonos delivered us in May. But as someone mentioned earlier, I don’t know why you would have to log in remotely to play your music and worry about if the Sonos servers were up of not. The only thing that I can think of is that my music is all owned by me and resides on my locally stored NAS drive. Maybe one or two songs come from Sonos Music that I tried as an experiment, since I’m reading that most users subscribe to music services. So maybe, because I don’t use any remote music services, I don’t rely on logging into a remote Sonos service for them to handoff or be the middleman to supply my music to me. I might be wrong, but that’s what I think.

I just quit using the Sonos app altogether & everything works fine now. I use Apple Music & Amazon music. No more skipping & craziness like I had with the Sonos app. I just airplay to whatever speakers/ rooms I want. I don’t use a NAS so this may not work for you. The Sonos app is complete garbage in my opinion.

I agree.  I finally agree.  The Sonos App as it stands now, with the rollout that preceded it, is a train wreck.  I finally took a trial of ROON, it plays flawlessly to all - ALL - (and there are many of them) my Sonos devices AND everything else in my home.   While I invested heavily in the the Sonos Ecosystem and didn’t anticipate having to buy an outside license (roon) to fully use and enjoy my system, Roon is simple and orders of magnitude better interms of drop free playback, interactivity of the library, navigation, integration with with Hwarware outside of Sonos and even picking up my library outside the home.   The only place Sonos accels at this point is the services like Tune-In and MyRadioTuner.  Thge current Sonos Exerience is deeply disappointing.

Just did an IOS update. Same two issues. What a surprise.

Sono’s losses have widened in the last quarter while revenues have slumped following their disastrous new app roll out and a lukewarm response to their recently released Ace headphone Arc Ultra and Sub 4, which was supposed to increase revenues at the struggling US Company.

During the past three months revenues which included their Ace headphones fell 20% to US$255M from US$305M as of September 2023.

Revenue for the past 12 months to September 2024, fell from $1.65 billion to $1.58 billion.

Losses for the past three months have gone from $28.3M in September 2023 to $69.3M as of September 2024.

The app still needs work.Note: NO VOLUME OPTION FOR THE LIVING ROOM PLAY 3.  This is a constant issue.  I have the Play 3 near my recliner so the the rest of the household isn’t disturbed by my late night TV viewing. Back to the drawing board SONOS!

I've been a Roon user for as long as it has existed. Although I typically used it with my headphone setups and non-Sonos speakers, I have increasingly used it with Sonos after the app fail. Try adding the URLs of your favourite radio stations to the Roon radio feature as a replacement for TuneIn etc. If you can't easily find the URLs, Google “radiobrowser”, which is an excellent source.

Thank you, I’ll add a bunch of stations to this resource!

Sonos app feedback: The current app is very sluggish and not user-friendly. The speaker selection process is frustrating—I can’t simply select an individual speaker; instead, I have to select all, play sound, and then manually deselect speakers. This process feels unnecessarily complicated. Having used the app for some time now, I find it a significant step backward compared to the older version. Please consider addressing these issues in future updates to improve the user experience."
regards Adrian

You might start a new topic on your selection issue, the app isn't doing that for most folks.

Verify all Sonos and controllers are on the latest release. Then power down ALL Sonos,  revootroutrr and controller  before powering up your Sonos. That may fix the sluggish issue.

I’ve been researching and watching a lot of Home WI-FI System reviews. It comes down to two choices, BlueSound and Sonos. The BlueSound app resembles the new Sonos app and claims to be very intuitive. So I just need to remember this should Sonos leave town permanently. If that be the case, then I would download and install the BlueSound app. I just don’t want to do it now and mess up my existing ability to play from my NAS drive. I don’t know what would happen if I have two music apps on my IOS devices. My local stereo store displays and sells BlueSound. They don’t even consider Sonos. They claim that BlueSound is more compatible with existing home stereo systems.

Nothing happens having multiple hardware control apps on your phone. Without any blueos hardware the app isn’t going to do much anyway.

On my phone/tablet I had a mix of Sonos, MusicCast, Linn from manufacturers and various mpd, Dlna, openhome and a 3rd party Sonos control apps.

Like any firmware/software combination BlueOS has its own share of issues and in the past hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Personally I wouldn’t touch them.

I’d expect most manufacturers are keeping a close eye on LinkPlay. Regardless of what extra bells and whistles a manufacturer claims their higher price justifies, in the consumer market when something is good enough for less money customers will vote with their wallet.

Their recent announcement about Audio Pro releasing WiiM speakers which use the WiiM home app, means rather than trying to do everything themselves under the WiiM brand, they will partner with other companies. So WiiM for port/amp alternatives, Audio Pro for speakers, how long before a lasting sound bar range appears from a partner?

Some good points. I only mention this because I was watching various YouTube videos and went to my local stereo store ( NOT BestBuy) where I purchased all my stereo equipment over the years. I know no one does it like this any more but I have Yamaha separates with a 440 watt amplifier and these massive $6,000 Definitive Technology  speakers in each corner of my living room. Nothing compares to the chest pounding sound of listening to Carmina Burana’s opening track or Emerson, Lake and Palmer’s Brain Salad Surgery. And my Sonos Connect has made that all happen a few years back. So went to the stereo store wear I purchased my first CD ever in 1983, Brahms's Symphony No. 4, which was put into a BlueSound device and within a minute, was copied into the system and popped up in the app and I was listening to it through their system. It was effortless. And I was told that I didn’t need any BlueSound equipped to download the app and get it to recognize my existing music library. So that is why I said what I said. So there is hope out there.

I would rather stay with Sonos, but their little releases each week, and not fixing my two simple issues, like adding a Save button and remembering my place in the playlist without taking me to the top every time, are really p***ing me off.

I've received 2 android app updates in the last week. Aesthetics and features appear unchanged. However, I'm seeing a big improvement in stability and responsiveness. There is minimal lag when opening the app, always finds my system, moving between screens is quick and loading playlists/albums/etc is much faster. No issues with volume control.

I still cannot create and save alarms on my Sonos system since the update six months ago

I still cannot create and save alarms on my Sonos system since the update six months ago

Is this because you can't find the feature or you try and set alarms and it doesn't work? I agree this was a (major) problem initially, it for the last month or so I have been able to create and manage alarms easily and reliably. If the latter, I suggest turning off every one of your Sonos components, leaving for 5 minutes and then turning them back on one by one. Shouldn't be needed but seems to fix a lot of issues!

The issue is that alarms don’t save and cannot be created in the app. I navigate to the Alarms pane in the app, attempt to create an alarm, but when I try to save the alarm, it disappears. There are a number of people still experiencing this issue:

Oh my… where do I start.

All was perfect, enjoying the chill out music every morning through the Sonnos surround system in my living room... until one day I wasn’t.

First, I realised the living room ungrouped all other Sonos products and started showing only Arc. On top of that, I was not able to control the volume, it just disappeared. The surround system consists of Arc, Sub Gen3 and 2x Sonos One Gen2. It also didn’t work anymore.

Wtf is happening?

I started Google’ing the issue and I read most topics on this forum regarding this problem and as many suggested I reset the Arc. The volume control appeared for a day or two and then disappeared again. Plus, I was never able to connect the rest of the surround system.

Today I’m not even able to play any music in my living room.

I’ve spent hours to try to fix the problem and now, I have to spend more hours calling Sonos support to try to figure out the problem and fix it (potentially).

Ok, software bugs can happen, but why there are no updates to fix the issues?

For the premium price I expect premium quality, not to waste my time on debugging Sonos issues.

As you can tell, while sitting in silence surrounded by $2000+ worth speakers that I cannot use... I have some regrets.

Ok. Looking at that thread it appears to be only iOS users reporting the issue. Not good enough from Sonos, but explains why I'm not experiencing it (across the family our control of Sonos is probably 80% via android, 10% via iOS, 5% via Alexa, 5% via PC; I'm the only one who sets Sonos alarms and I use android)

So now the Sonos webservers seem to be down, so I can’t play anything in my house. Why was the system redesigned to have this failure mode?

I’d guess to harvest your data

As you can tell, while sitting in silence surrounded by $2000+ worth speakers that I cannot use... I have some regrets.

I had a similar problem last week. I have a Beam (eArc connected) and two One SL’s in a surround configuration called Sony Bravia. It’s been playing great, so I wanted to add the Kitchen SL to the Living Room surround and complete silence for hours. I worked for two hours unplugging and resetting all devices, constantly banging my head behind the TV. Every time my Bravia TV would power up, it always indicated “switching to external speakers”, but no sound anywhere. I went into the settings on the TV, and it indicated that I had external speakers. And I tried to remember how everything was set up before this issue, like what devices were checked in one of the menus, but I was getting frustrated. I mentioned this in this group and someone got back to me and said this should work. I normally don’t have any problems listening to my music, since it’s all on my NAS drive. I have a number of iPads that I dedicate to each room and never change anything since the app is so horrible. Everything eventually came back, kind of by itself, since I didn’t know what I did after all these power cycles and reboots, and a gash on my head. I will NEVER try and add a speaker to my Living Room TV setup again because I have never had a problem with it before. And I just want to add, using the Windows Controller is the only thing that works like the old app does. I can sit at my desk, see all my rooms and their current playlists, select each room and hit the Play button, and I can hear each room playing. It works great. Now I’m waiting for these idiots at Sonos to remove the Windows Controller.

I’ve got news for you, they’ve been harvesting your data since day one.  Nothing about the old architecture precluded harvesting data. Their privacy policy states exactly what data is acquired, and the data listed therein has not changed since the addition of voice assistants back in 2017.

@John Guarr

I would suspect that a surround sound set up is not really a “group” and neither is it a speaker in it’s own right.  Therefore adding something to it which isn’t part of the surround set up isn’t really intuitive and has probably never been considered by Sonos as a valid action?

Yes, you’re probably right, I would be altering the surround setup. I learned my lesson. Thank you.
