BBC Radio 4 rights restrictions


This morning I’ve had repeated interruption of BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme, “due to rights restrictions this part of the programme cannot be played”. Once was during a feature about the Euros, the next was in the middle of an interview with a government minister. So no music or anything particularly sensitive. 
Anyone had this before or know how to prevent it? The first instance lasted about 10 minutes.

For goodness sake, this is nothing to do with Sonos.  Complain to the BBC, if you really think this one-off annoyance justifies your time in doing so.  I suspect this arose because radio 4 was this morning playing various clips of football commentary, ahead of tonight’s England - Germany clash.  It is usually the case that if internet streams of sports commentary are blanked out, there is something making the BBC think you are outside the UK.  This is entirely different from FM broadcasts.  It is unlikely to be Sonos that is responsible for that.

It sounds as though the BBC made a bit of a mess of this this morning so that it affected non-sports items, but that’s not a Sonos issue.

For the avoidance of doubt I am not a Sonos staff member, so I feel free to say that directing criticism to Sonos for this makes little sense..

Amen to all that. Don’t shoot the messenger. Sonos simply connects a player to a server address that it’s been given by TuneIn or whoever. What comes down the pipe -- and whatever geo-restriction policy is applied to the content based on the user’s end-point location --- is entirely down to the content provider. In this case it’s the BBC.

Why are BBC listeners so entitled? Is it an English thing? (I am English, for reference). Their precious stream gets messed with by the BBC and they demand Sonos fix it. Laughable.

Last week I tried to get my elderly Mum’s new UK Echo Show to play BBC stations, but it refused. Why? Its a UK model, in the UK. But I use my US Amazon account, so the BBC block it. Do I complain to Amazon? No. Its the damn BBC.

Sorry but frankly this is passing the buck. Like others on this thread I am a UK based listener. If I can listen to BBC on my conventional FM radio then it is specific to Sonos.  Maybe it is specific to Sonos and some other streaming services but as I only listen to Sonos then afaik it is specific to Sonos. Another reply here says it was working fine on a different streamed service. 

If I turned on my FM radio and it delivered the same message then I would contact the BBC.  I did not try but I am pretty sure I would have not had the same problem if I had accessed the stream via BBC Sounds on my phone.  Next time it happens I will try that.  If it can be listened to on BBC Sounds then surely Sonos would accept that it should also be listened to on Sonos.  

The reason for the message must be that something somewhere is checking for the location of the listener and incorrectly thinking they are not in the UK.  That check is at least in part the responsibility of Sonos and presumably part of some licensing agreement that exists between the BBC and streamed service providers (in this case Sonos).  This agreement will cover delivery of content to non UK listeners.    

We are not talking about some obscure broadcaster or radio station.  Assuming said licensing agreement between Sonos and the BBC, then you are their customer.  So you can report it to them as an issue for them to investigate with you as it is impacting your customers and so is your problem.  

Perhaps some insight as to how BBC streams are provided to Sonos might help here.

These services have integrations into the Sonos system, which allows users to listen to these streams on Sonos players. Any content provided by these streams that is able to be played on Sonos is directly under the control of the content provider or the radio service aggregator. Sonos does not have any control over the content that these streams provide, nor do we inject messaging around region restrictions. These messages are coming from the stream provided by the BBC that has been given to the radio service. Sonos Radio uses the streams that TuneIn has, so the experience will be the same between those two. 

If you’re hearing unexpected messaging, then that is coming from the BBC via the streams that they provide. All Sonos is doing here is allowing you to select that stream from the radio service, and connecting to the server provided by the content provider (BBC in this case). Please, direct your questions to the BBC and understand that we’re not “passing the buck”, we’re simply unable to control what the BBC sends via their streaming link.

If you take your responsibilities to your customers seriously or indeed have any pride in the service you offer you would take ownership of the problem yourselves and talk to the BBC on behalf of your customers instead of adopting this “not our problem” attitude (which stinks).

I had this issue this morning and a few weeks ago.  I think it would be professional and helpful of Sonos to contact the BBC on behalf of their customers.  The BBC would surely take the issue more seriously from Sonos representing several thousand customers.  If I bought an item from a retailer and ended up with an empty box I would not expect the retailer to shrug and refer me to the manufacturer or distributer.

Appreciate that it probably isn’t Sonos that is at fault.

For those who live in the UK using Radioplayer as opposed to Tunein for your source for BBC may well solve problems of this nature. For example we had a problem this week with the rights message whilst we were listening via Tunein (an old an alarm setting had initiated the stream) but we we started another speaker going using Radioplayer there was no issue.

Radio player is licensed for use in a few other countries so the problem maybe resolved for those countries although since this is about rights management maybe not

If you create a radio station with a direct link to the BBC stream i think it fixes it for UK listeners as it bypasses Tunein. So far no rights issue notices. So far, I can’t be held responsible as it’s not my stream...

As far as i can tell these are the same quality, you can also stream these on VLC media player while out and about. Why? well if you use VLC you can set a much larger buffer than the BBC Sounds app and therefore get a more stable stream in the event of variable phone signal like in the car or on a train.

 

It’s tempting to blame the BBC for the rights issue. If they simply don’t have broadcast rights then they can’t let the data stream. If they only have rights in UK and the stream goes to multiple countries then they have to block it or breach the agreements they have for using the media. It’s more a factor of the complexity of how media rights are set up and sold. On TV/radio broadcast locally it’d just not come up. The nature of streaming reveals the prevously hidden issue.

Me too. Upon searching I found other threads on this site from 5 years ago with the same issue but I did not find an answer to this seemingly very old problem. I’ve had my Sonos for many years but I’m becoming less and less enamoured with it.

Don't be ridiculous, James. When many satisfied customers in the UK flag up a problem that didn't previously exist it behoves you to look into this. The BBC must have changed something in how they recognise "foreign" streaming services. You are providing these streams. Your investigation will be much more productive than ours. Please look into it. This attitude will not win you many friends and will lose you customers.

I must say I do not completely agree with you, though as always “c'est le ton qui fait la musique”, and some of the remarks seem a bit harsh. For a long time Sonos was just a conduit for sounds others played through it. But when you invent something called Sonos Radio, you take on a responsibility. The least you can do is try to find out why this happens on Sonos - as I’ve read it does not happen on a Naim in the same household.

I got the same and have had a few times.  Playing by Alexa solves it but its not what I want.

Third time today. Admittedly this last cut off Anne Atkins mid flow, so small mercies, but it is extremely annoying. What is going on?

Glad it’s not just me!.  Same issue on same programme.  Tried pausing and starting the stream again, switching to other content and then trying again.  Nothing worked.  Same in more than one room.  

This does not seem to be frequently reported but it did happen to me a few weeks ago.  The only thread I could find is from 5 years ago which claimed the problem was fixed by the introduction of HLS streams.  Clearly not.

Given I am in the UK and accessing Sonos from a UK based IP address then I can see no logical explanation.

I wonder if it was because there was an extended article on the football and sport gets filtered out for the feed. I was using the Sonos Radio channel - I’m not sure if Sonos Radio is using TuneIn behind the scenes.

I thought the localisation issue was sorted out years ago; hope it’s not coming back.

We also sometimes get this on the BBC World Service overnight, which I find quite ironic.

I listen on BBC Sounds. I am living on the ‘continent’. I had the same issue. I’ve had the message a few times before: but never on the Today programme!

Same here folks, deleted TuneIn to make sure using Sonos Radio. Still no dice.

Same problem here. I tried installing a different app…mytuner but it still happens.  don’t seem to have the same problem on other bbc stations???? driving me mad!

Radio 4 cutting out repeatedly this morning, repeating message about “rights” cutting in randomly and frequently.

I had this all morning as well. Quite annoying while making the breakfast in the kitchen. On the Naim streamer in the living room the feed was not interrupted.
