Cannot re-connect Sonos Connect

I’m resetting up my Sonos system and my Sonos Connect (Gen 2) will not move into connect mode. I have tried a factory reset. Unplugged and re-connected several times, always holding down the appropriate buttons But every time it powers up it goes straight to white light.  No flashing orange or green lights, so is undetectable by the app.  Is this a hardware problem?

You need to keep pressing the Play/Pause button until the LED changes, not just while power is being applied. This can take several tens of seconds.
