Venturing into the garden

Hi, we have recently installed Sonos connect across our house.  Decided to go with Sonos 1 used units as the cost was 1/5 of new.  It works like a charm so very pleased to-date.

We are about to venture into the garden, and we have a pair of Sonance Mariner 86 speakers - already purchased.

2 Questions pls:

  • Do we need to run speaker cable from the house?  Or should we try and locate an amp outside somehow?  Not sure about frost resistance…
  • We have two patios in our garden, and 1 pair of speakers.  Would we be best splitting these (1 speaker each), or install on 1 patio only…

Thoughts and advice much appreciated.

Steve

With respect to AMP, they are not rated for outdoor use. Wherever you mount AMP, you need to maintain a proper environment. There are specialized enclosures with rain protection, fans, and heaters. Plus, you’d need power for the AMP and enclosure.

Where do you spend your time? If you spend most time in one area, two speakers in that area would be best. It’s a bit over the top. But you could wire for two speakers in each area, and move the speakers as appropriate if the application changes. For example, if you essentially spend all outdoor listening time in patio #1 and have a once a year party using both patios, move a speaker for the party.

You might consider the Amp inside and running wires to each location where you’d use speakers. Terminate the wires at each location in speaker jacks and add short wires to each speaker with plugs on them. Then move the speakers around as you like.

Many thanks for the answers.  Very much appreciated.  We have decided to bite the bullet and run cables to both ...then move/add speakers as needed.  A
