Can you use the line in adapter on one of your Era 100s but play the music through grouped speakers (i.e,. stereo sound)?

Yes.

In Sonos terms, you’ll pair 2 speakers together to form a Single room that plays stereo.  “Group” is temporarly having more than one room play the same audio stream.  So wrong terminology but right idea.

FYI, with a stereo pair, one of the speakers is always the lead, or master, of the other.  Whether it’s getting the line in audio, bluetooth audio, streaming directly, or getting audio from another Sonos room, it gets the audio and passes the other L/R channel to it’s pair.

Yes but…

Inputs on Sonos used as Surrounds are disabled.
