Taking ownership of existing Sonos system

We moved into a house where the owners left behind their Sonos speakers. We also have a prior system in our prior house. We can see and use the speakers in the house, but I can’t manage the system since it is still managed by the previous owners. I also tried adding one of the Sonos Fives from our previous house into this system (or just into a new system) and that didn’t seem to work either.

So here is what I want to do.

Create a brand new system under my account that includes the Sonos speakers than came with the house, as well as our existing speakers.

Is Factory resetting all the speakers the only way to do this (assuming I can’t contact the prior owners to transfer the system)?

If I could contact the prior owners (they moved out of town) should I ask them to transfer ownership or “forget” their system.

Thanks

A few more points…

Yes you should reset the speakers that were left behind by the previous owners.

You should also setup the WiFi in your new home with the same SSID and password as was (is) in your old home. By doing so the speakers you bring from your old home will automatically connect to the WiFi in your new home after a few minutes. You can adjust the room names later in the app.

The speakers you reset when plugged can be added just by selecting “Add a new product/speaker” in the Sonos app. Also your devices such as phones, tablets and other WiFi devices you bring ( to your new home) will connect without issue in 99% of cases.

I’d think you want to do that, rather than ‘transferring’ the system following the instructions in the manage your account FAQ, for two reasons. First, you want those devices on your Sonos ‘account’, showing up at www.sonos.com, but more importantly, you probably don’t want their old streaming accounts on your system, but yours instead. Technically, they should have factory reset before selling their home, and left instructions on how to set them up as ‘new’.

Thanks.  To clarify, should I hit “forget the system” before the factory reset?  I presume that will take away any of the other streaming etc playlists that are showing up and I can essentially set up a clean system?

Why reset the devices from both system though? I only reset the speaker from the new home, transport the speakers from your old home the the new home and ad the speakers you just reset to the system from your old home.
