I am so disappointed in Sonos - have been using it for over 10 years… service is now just garbage. I needed to switch to a new router- this should be a push of a button. It could not be done without call help desk - 1 hour waiting - 40 minutes on the phone - then he got it working w Ethernet only.

Tried to switch to wifi - followed instructions - not recognizing any products - no viable solution on the website… only has direction for S1 I have S2…Back on a call for support - message was 50 minute wait - actually waited an hour and 20 minutes before I had to leave for an appointment.  This is ridiculous…. I have 8 speakers and want out. Will not use the upgrade options because I don’t want to continue my investment in this company.

Any advice on best alternatives?

Why do you want to switch to WIFI?

Did your speakers work when wired to your router?

Did you set the Same SSID and password on the new router the same as the old one?

@DS89 From the products in your profile you probably need to follow the unsupported products section on this page.

The app cannot be used to add a WiFi network to all products, only products with Bluetooth LE. In one of the wizard screens there is a supported products link, which is easily missed.

Unfortunately if you only have unsupported products that were setup on Ethernet/Sonosnet the wizard just reports no products found after searching the network and doesn’t configure WiFi on them.

I had to factory reset my gen 1 devices listed under unsupported products. As I didn’t have any newer products connected it meant setting up as a new system, losing all my existing services settings. To switch my devices to WiFi I did the following

  1. remove Ethernet cables from all unsupported devices
  2. factory reset the unsupported devices
  3. Close the app completely and restart it
  4. In the app it showed no products found
  5. For the first speaker I added it by using setup a new system
  6. for the remaining speakers added them as normal
  7. Add streaming services back to the app

The order of setting up the products for the new WiFi is

  1. Supported speaker use the app
  2. Then unsupported speakers need to be factory reset

I was very surprised the speakers needed a factory reset and if I wasn’t doing it for testing purposes would have just left everything on Sonosnet with a single speaker plugged into Ethernet.

In terms of alternatives, my advice and method I used to start was:

  • work out which streaming services you want now and might want in the future
  • do you want external connections, hdmi, hdmi arc, line in
  • decide if you want self contained speakers or can use standalone players and external amplification

From there it starts to narrow the list of alternatives, especially if you want self contained speakers.

After that the different control apps became my decider. I went a similar route I did with my Tv. Treat the streaming player as a swappable part, but the amplification/speakers as the bit to keep and not need to change. While my AVRs and speakers have the streaming built in, they will continue to work as dumb devices in the future, so like my tv if the streaming bits stop working I’ll just add external players.

Exactly. Changing your WiFi name & password every time you get a new ISP.router is like changing your phone number everytime you get a new mobile/cell, you have to advise all your contacts, its hassle. Its far easier to ‘port’ the same number to a new phone. Do same with your WiFi, ‘port’ the WiFi name & password to new router.

Oh interesting. Thanks so much for thoughtful replies to what was largely a vent!
We changed internet service providers. I am not sure if it was an option to maintain the same name and password. I will see if it is possible to change now, however, I will have to think that through as it may interfere with other systems.

I imagine there is a reason this was not possible as the Sonos tech went through this process to wire. I at the time thought the cable was temporary based on our discussion and thought I could unplug after the system started working… unfortunately I did not try that with tech on the line. Reason I would like wifi is the Sonos website indicates this is optimal setup unless wifi is unable to serve all speakers…. And equally important, my router is some distance from the hub speaker and the cable is clutter in the family room….  Thanks again for the replies!

Thank you sigh! This is very helpful. I was not aware some products would not be supported. What confuses me is the system was operating by wifi before we changed our service provider.  Regardless,  I will try your approach… I was hesitant to go back to factory settings but will try.

Thanks so much for your time on this reply.
