When I have my beam connected to my Philips tv I have full surround sound from beam and two play 1s.
when watching tv through my bt box I only get sound from the beam not the two play 1s even though on the sonos app it says 5.1.

It often depends on the ‘show’ you’re watching. Make sure you’re testing with a recent movie. There are many shows that run merely a stereo signal on a 5.1 carrier.
