I have a Sonos Play 5 (gen 1) and I’d love to add some speakers to our patio as a surprise to my husband for his birthday. These speakers would live outside permanently and ideally be able to play the same music both inside and out when we have friends over. I’m on a budget and I’m also not super knowledgeable about these things. Do I need to have an amp? Can I just do outdoor speakers? Do they have to be Sonos brand? What’s the deal with all this?

If they are meant to stay outside, you would need outdoor speakers that would be wired to a Sonos Amp.  The Amp would need to be in a covered, sheltered area within WiFi range of your router and the wires run from there.  Sonos does have outdoor speakers that it sells in a bundle with the Amp, but any brand can be used with just the Amp from Sonos.
