Setting up Play 1: stuck on "finalizing connection"

I’m setting up a Play 1 on a brand new network using the Sonos 2 app.  All of the steps seem to complete (chime, joining the temporary network, etc) then the “finalizing connection” screen appears with the bouncing dots.  I’ve waited 20+ minutes and nothing has changed.  Do I start over?  what’s the hangup?

Well, third times a charm.  I (once again):

  1. deleted the Sonos App
  2. rebooted my phone
  3.  reset the Play 1 to factory settings (hold down play/pause and + volume at the same time while plugging in and holding the buttons until you get a flashing orange, then wait for the flashing green)
  4. then added a new speaker to a new network.

This time it connected just fine (in way less than 20 minutes!)
