So, the soundbar gave up recently so we’re left with two Play1s. Can the Play1s be used without a soundbar? The Sonos site says two can be used to create a ‘stereo’ effect but nowhere does it mention (as far as I can tell) that they can’t be used without a soundbar …

Yes, they can be two individual speakers or a stereo pair, without a soundbar. If they were surrounds you may need to “remove surrounds” in the app. Then you can set them up as you wish as a new “room”.
