Hello, I received two play1 and play5 gen1 speakers from a friend and I am trying to listen to music but they do not support AirDrop and my question is whether I need to buy an additional device

AirPlay 2? Yes, you’d need a Sonos speaker that can receive AirPlay 2 and run on S1 to group with those speakers.

The PLAY:5 gen 1 will only run on S1, the PLAY:1s can run on either operating system, just one at a time, not both simultaneously.

If it were me, I’d give up on the PLAY:5 gen 1, use it to ‘trade in’ on a newer Sonos Five. Then you could run all your devices on S2, and be a much happier camper.

I’d not give up on the Play 5 Gen 1, just put it somewhere you’d be happy to have any music, like the garage.

As said, then get a Five and go to S2 for the ones you’ll use in the house.
