I currently have a Sonos playbar and sub and want to add a set of Sonos 5 speakers to my system.

Do the Sonos 5 need to be connected to my router or will the connect to my existing speakers wireless through the app?

They can connect to you router and other speakers wireless via wifi.  The app is there for setup and as a controller, but isn’t involved in the actual connection between speaker or getting any audio from services.

I’m curious if they’re PLAY:5 gen 1 or PLAY:5 gen 2, or Sonos Fives?

The original (gen 1) can only run the operating system S1, where as gen 2, the Sonos Fives, and the PLAYBAR/Sub combination can all run the S2 operating system.
