I have had a Play 1 system for years, consisting of 9 speakers, it was connected to wifi through a wifi mesh and it has worked wonderfully.

I recently moved house and have taken the wifi mesh with me. Plugged it in and all works wonderfully - magic.  However, for reasons I will not get into here, I now need to remove the wifi mesh and want to run my sonos system from my new wifi.

Looked up and followed the instructions online about how to do this, i.e. factory reset and setup a new system.

I turned off all my speakers and factory reset one of them (call me a cynic but I wanted to make sure the process worked with one speaker before I jump with the whole lot).  The process is not working and I currently have a speaker which I cannot connect to anything other than a temporary network!

What have I tried:

Run app with phone connected to new wifi:-

  1. ‘No Products Found’ - fine. Selected setup new system.  Finds Play 1 - I requested that it adds it. Gets to wifi connection and the app automatically wants to connect it to a temporary wifi - there are no options for me to change this!
  2. Uninstalled the app and reinstalled it.  Opened app and it acted like a new system setup - followed the instructions. Gets to wifi connection and again it wants to connect to a temporary wifi - I cannot change this!
  3. Hard wired the speaker into the router and tried again.  Only offers temporary wifi connection again!
  4. Gave up - reconnected the wifi mesh, turned on all my speakers and reopened the app (with my phone now connected to the wifi mesh)
  5. There is my system (minus the factory reset speaker) - fine.  Up pops the banner - ‘Add Play 1 to your system?’ - I select it. Starts the process, gets to wifi connection and yet again it automatically wants to connect to a temporary wifi.
  6. I hard wire the speaker into the wifi mesh box - still the same, only offered a temporary wifi.

So the situation is that I now have one speaker that I cannot connect to anything other than a temporary wifi and therefore is useless to me unless I can find a solution.

I am loathed to factory reset all my speakers at once because if things don’t work as it is stated they should I will have an system which I can no longer use and whilst it is some years old, I love my sonos system and it was a huge investment that I cannot afford to replace or lose.

My Question / Problem

How do I get the app to connect my Play 1 to the wifi the phone and my existing sonos system is connected to?  Can anyone help me please?

Don’t Factory Reset anything else. You need to sign the phone on to the temporary WiFi provided by PLAY:1. After PLAY:1 is added its temporary WiFi will shut down. Most phones will automatically return to the usual WiFi network

Thank you.  I will give that a try and see how I get on.
