Is it possible to have a pair of wall speakers that are wired to a CD player which I can opt to play music from my iPad wirelessly? Or must I have a have a separate pair of speakers for both sources?

I’m not sure that you understand the Sonos system properly. It is entirely possible to get your CD player to input into the Sonos ecosystem, via a line in, most frequently on a Port, or Sonos Five. Once it is ‘in’ the Sonos ecosystem, it can be played on any Sonos speaker in your network. Or, you can choose to use AirPlay 2 to stream music stored on your iPad, or stream an internet source via the Sonos app.
