Is it possible to connect the Play:1 speaker to a laptop to watch a movie, or does the audio only play music through the approved services on the app? Thanks.

No, it isn't. The way that Sonos speakers work is that you tell them where to go and get the "sound" from (I'm simplifying here, there are other situations that don't apply to a PLAY:1), and the software doesn't know how to get sound from your computer.
Now, the other situations. If you had a Sonos One speaker, and a Mac, you could conceivably send the computer's sound to the Sonos One using AirPlay 2. Or, you could add a Sonos device to your setup that has a line in, such as a PLAY:5, one of the CONNECT pair, or a Sonos Amp, all of which have analog inputs. Of course, each of those inputs have a 70ms delay associated with them, which could be troublesome if you're watching a video.
The simple fact is that Sonos speakers aren't designed to be computer speakers. You'd be much better off getting a real computer speaker to use.
