Is there a way to shut down the Sonos when finished using or does it just stay on all the time?

Sonos is meant to stay on. It enters a lowered power mode a few seconds after the music stops.
Pushing the power button on top of the Sonos 100, does not seem to turn it off. The light gives a few red blinks, and then goes back to white. From your response, it would seem that the only way to turn off a Sonos 100 completely, is to disinfect the electric plug, Is that so? I am Technologically Challenged. So I am in need of advice on how to proceed. Thank you. Alan
'Sonos 100'? There's no such thing.
And nothing has a power button on top. There's a play/pause button which, if pressed when there's no current source selected, will cause the status LED to flash orange indicating an error.
If it's a PLAY:1 you're talking about it, it simply goes into a low power mode automatically when music is stopped.
