I'm looking for a description of all the differences between the two generations. Thanks!
Where to start. They're totally different, and in the opinion of many the Play:5 gen2 should have been called 'Play:6' or similar.

As ratty said, they're more different than they are alike. Both sound good, play music, and have a line-in port. The gen2 has more capabilities and is generally bigger in every way. Some good insights here on the blog too.

If there's something specifically you're looking for, let us know, we're happy to answer.
I have a single gen 1 and would like to know if a gen 2 can be added to create a stereo pair. If yes I'd also like to know if this would be a good idea, given that the two are apparently so different.
No. You can only make a stereo pair using two of the same model. And they sound totally different anyway.
