In February 2018 I bought a Sonos Play:5 latest version. Today I decided to buy a second one to create a stereo couple and discovered it is replaced by the new five.
Device design is different, so difficult for me to put two “different” objects side by side but, much more important, they are not compatible!

This means I should buy two new five!

On Sonos site they claim their products are made to stay for many years, that their systems will be upgradable with new Sonos products. This is not true, and for sure I will never by a Sonos product again. My experience with their products is over.
Sonos, probably a company with a short life, like their products.

The original Play:5 was replaced with the Gen 2 model in 2015. Five years ago. I assume you bought yours used?

Plenty of places still have the Play:5 Gen 2 for sale.  Google is your friend.

Bought brand new on Amazon. 😢

Anyway, we are talking 5 years ago!

understand a new product, but compatibility should be guaranteed.

I think the OP is talking about already having a Play:5/gen2 and wanting to buy another one to make a stereo pair.

@MarcoMilano Despite Sonos having announced that the Five will replace the Play:5/gen2 you can still find the earlier model for sale, just not direct from Sonos. I did a quick search on Amazon Italy and they have both black and white models available.

The Five has a different computing platform from the Play:5/gen2, hence there’s no option to make a stereo pair between the two.

Also, the new Five is most certainly compatible, it will group and play with all other modern devices.  You just can’t pair it with the earlier model Play:5, but that is no different than any other device Sonos has ever made, save the “designed for purpose” One SL.

Thanks for your kind reply.
I know that play:5 is still available, but would you buy it knowing that actual Sonos devices use a different computing platform and this model is out of production? And for that price?

i am afraid the the app will soon no more updated and my appliance(s) won’t work anymore.
I don't trust to invest in sonos today.

@MarcoMilano, the Play:5 2nd Gen. is a ‘Modern Product’.

Sonos S2 overview and compatibility

@Smilja this is good news!

thanks a lot.

It is indeed. Sonos are committed to supporting the Play:5 fully for AT LEAST five years. That means all the new system features that come along will be available to your speakers.  I have 4 gen 2 Play:5s and have no concerns at all about them. Being discontinued from sale and losing support are very different things.
