What is the difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2 SONOS 5’s?

    Everything. It should not have been called the Play:5 gen 2 but something completely different. For a start it has 6 digital amps and speaker drivers. Much more powerful. Great bass, generally better sound. Pairing them as stereo speakers is not possible, and would sound weird with such different sound. The gen 1 has a headphone socket, the gen 2 doesn't.

    Are you saying Second Generation is better than Gen 1?

    In my view (and I think just about every reviewer's), yes. Isn't that what you would hope?
