Is there a way to have speakers belong to different groups based on what you are playing?

I have a set of Play:1’s in a surround setup that I am thinking of replacing with Era 300’s or Sonos 5’s BUT…

I do not want to hear music from my Sonos ARC when I play music (EG: from my turntable). Where as when I see a film I would like to include all speakers in the suround setup. Is this possible? I don’t really want to have a set of dedicated speakers for music and a seperate set for suround speakers in my living room…

At the moment the only way I can see to do this is to change the configuration, which means you need to do a Trueplay setup every time I watch TV or listen to music… This could mean a lot of dansing around my room waving a mobile up and down… And definately not something my wife and kids can do...

There must be a better alternative to this?

That “switch between surrounds and stereo pair” request is made every few weeks, and has been added to Sonos’ “feature requests”. Don’t hold your breath for it to come soon though.

I have seen many requests for this functionality, and it has been forwarded to Sonos’ engineering department as a feature request.

It may not be something so easy to accomplish since it will require the app to force the main speaker to unpair the surrounds and automatically configure them as a stereo pair, which would essentially become a different “room” because of the Sonos ecosystem. Switching back and forth would require the app and speakers to remember Trueplay settings for each mode.

Because the new app has negatively affected so many users recently and is being blamed for many issues... do you really want Sonos engineers to change it again at this point?

Thanks for the reply… Yes… They just need to employ some good test engineers rather than sending beta’s out all the time. I don’t spend 1000’s of dollars to have such a basic feature not exist.

Being able to liften to music in stereo vs surround for AV is not a big ask in my option. Who wants to lisften to hi fidelity music through a soundbar?

Definately not me…

Thanks for the reply… Strange it didn’t come in the new app?

Saving a profile for stereo vs suround sound and reading the input source shouldn’t be a huge issue.

Sorry: it always amuses me when anyone says “it’s easy” or “it’s not a big issue” when they have no idea what will actually be involved or how it will impact on kit. Though if you work or worked for Sonos and have inside knowledge, I apologise but I’m speaking generally…

It has nothing to do with saving a profile, the difference between a surround configuration and a music configuration is a hardware issue.  In surround mode, the radios are reconfigured to a one-way dedicated 5 GHz connection which requires a series of handshakes to get correct.  This is why configuring surrounds take a bit of time.  The same is true when going the other way.  So a quick toggle from one “profile” to another is not possible, which is why this option, which has been requested since the Playbar over a decade ago, is probably not coming anytime soon.
