I have a Play1 on my counter in the master bath and now added and complimented with in ceiling speakers and grouped with a Connect Amp located in the closet. I want to group the volume control on the (easy to reach) Play1 instead of pulling out a smartphone.
Please notice that all of us whishing for a hardware group volume option are saying OPTION, NOT default as is the case with the mute button change. It would make no or little confusion to add this as an option in group settings. Why not make it? How could this bother anyone? We are different type of users, with different needs. As mentioned, the mute button is ALREADY grouped, why not make volume a hardware group OPTION?
When you say that this not possible...Do you mean it's never possible or that the software does not support it currently?

Hi Gerard,

from experience I would say this should be possible as it is a software matter. That is why I turned your question into an Idea for others to back your request.
When you say that this not possible...Do you mean it's never possible or that the software does not support it currently?

Yes! PLEASE add this to the next software update. It is a HUGE issue by us, having a pair of Play1's grouped with a Connect in same room and really need to have this physical volume control opportunitiy as it is a hassle to open the app every time you need volume adjustment for whole group. This should be a software selection which you could just turn off and on as you like. PLEASE Sonos, do this before your competitors ;-)
Bump. The option to do this would be extremely useful. The mute button actually DOES behave like this already... it mutes the entire group. Having an *option* to lock each zone's respective levels and then allow the hardware buttons to control the entire group would be extremely helpful without always having to launch the app, wait for it to find the sonos system, then slide the volume... a process that takes about 10-15 seconds for such a simple operation.
I second here, I have 2 Play 5 mark2 in stereo and one Play 1 set at a lower volume (spread in the same room).

If I press the button on the actual speakers it will mess around with the balance that I had set between the 2 Play 5 and the Play1.

Instead I have to reach at my Phone/Tablet to set the volume without changing the balance - it's not practical and requires too many steps (unlock the phone, launch the app, and press the dedicated volume button of these devices).

If this functionnality could be added in the setting ,and not by default, as I understand that its not the liking of everyone here, it would be great.

Thanks !
using the hard buttons on the device shouldn't blast out the rest of the house.

That’s why in the first sentence I said it should be an option. Individual volume control makes sense if speakers are in different rooms. Group volume control makes more sense if speakers are in the same room or connected rooms.

I'm afraid Sonos isn't big on options. They are many things, but being flexible with user options is not one of them. Not saying that is good or bad, just saying that's their way.

Please add this as an option. It makes no sense to me to control volume of individual speakers if they’re in a group.

Funny, it makes perfect sense to me. If I want to crank it up in the bathroom in order to hear the music over the shower, using the hard buttons on the device shouldn't blast out the rest of the house. If I want to actually increase the volume in the group, I must use the app. As always YMMV, but for myself (and I assume others) the current way is more logical.
This would be a nice to have if being a configurable option. We generally control the volume of the speakers and have them all grouped such that we would always want to change the volume of the entire group.
Yes please! +1 from me. Option to make volume controls on a grouped Sonos component adjust group volume.
YES! Please add this feature as option.
+1 would be great to have the option to control group volume from the speaker buttons.
This would be killer. I've got roommates that watch my TV which has a 5.1 Sonos system, for example, and it would be great if they could use just the playbar hardware buttons to change the volume when I'm not around to change it for them.
Please DO NOT DO THIS unless it is an option rather than default behavior. as somebody who regularly runs 8 or more zones in a group it would cause complete chaos if somebody in a given room should decide to change the volume and it disrupted listening in other areas.
Definitely want to see this added as an optional feature
+1

But I realise that making this a straight-forward option is tough. Hence all the negative reactions.

Actually I'm now in the process of configuring a Raspberri-Pi with some physical buttons to achieve this. Primary reason is I want to be able to switch input (for a group) to line-in if I put on a record (vinyl). But then I also want to be able to control group volume from that same spot without the need for my mobile. It's gonna take some tinkering, some soldering and some money, but i'll make it happen.
I think this is an idea, I think
When you say that this not possible...Do you mean it's never possible or that the software does not support it currently?  Is it technically possible as a feature enhancement in the future?
Please add this as an option. It makes no sense to me to control volume of individual speakers if they’re in a group.
The hard volume control has never controlled group volume. Ever.

Don't get me wrong, I realise this is the case, but the way it works makes it so much less appealing to have more speakers in my system. As much as I want more speakers to fill out my system, the loss of the hardware volume control makes it much less appealing to add additional speakers.

I'm just super bummed out about my purchase, because I've always used the hardware volume control for my original two Play 1 pair and sub.
I think a lot of people have more than just one speaker in the same room and cant´t see whats the problem to add this feature? Not very logical that two players are controlled by the bottons and not the third.. This thread are 3years old and still no progress? Just add an option to link a player to another player or a room just like the stereo pairing or the sub.

This will give the option to the users to choose to permanently link speakers in the same room or to use it like today.

SONOS: You have to understand that the users have different kind of needs and you have to give the users some options to choose and not do all the choosing yourself.

I just bought a third play 1 to fill out my room, only to find that i can no longer use the hardware volume control i have been for several years. It's super annoying i can't control the volume of the group via the hardware buttons, or add my new play 1 to the existing room.
Add me to the list of people who would love have the OPTION to control the volume of multiple speakers (not just the "stereo pair") from the buttons on a single speaker. Like the original post, I have a Play1 on my kitchen counter and a "stereo pair" of Play3s in the adjacent living room. I want to control the volume for all three speakers from the (easy to reach) Play1 instead of pulling out a smartphone.

I see this as an option under "room settings" (like "create stereo pair") where you "create volume group" (allowing the volume buttons on any one of the grouped speakers control the entire group)... I'm no software engineer, but this does not sound unachievable for the company that invented the best wireless audio system available to mankind...
-1I have speakers that I do not want in the group.
