When I open the app, my Move speakers turn on (light on top of the unit comes on). How do I turn the speakers off with the app?

You don’t. They turn to standby after a time limit(30min) by design, if off the base, but if on the base they will turn on when the app is active and don’t go to standby.
You can use a long press, 7 secs, of the power button on the Move to turn them completely off though.
