- Scenario: I have my phone, I’m at the beach (no wifi), I have 2 speakers (maybe two Roams or two Moves or whatever portable combination)

- Question: Why am I not able to play the music on both speakers?

I have the Roam 2, the Move 2, I think they have Bluetooth 5.0, is it a limitation of the Bluetooth?

I remember my years-old JBL speakers playing all together with Bluetooth… so what am I missing here?

Is Sonos not focusing on portable speakers at all? I need speakers that work together at home and I also can use them outside.

I would love to hear a technical reason for the lack of this capability

And no, I’m not looking for workarounds, like bringing two phones, changing the SSID of the hotspot and all that jazz

Hi @Ivan07z, welcome to the Sonos Community!

From having a look online: Android supports simultaneous Bluetooth audio playback, while iOS doesn’t. Less of a Bluetooth limitation and more of a source device limitation. Generally, allowing multiple connections and playing to those connections depends on the source device, such as your phone. I’m not an expert on Bluetooth though, so I could be wrong.

The way that this has been designed on Sonos is by using both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to allow Bluetooth playback on multiple Sonos speakers. If you have two Move 2’s or two Roam 2’s, you can set these up as a Bluetooth stereo pair without needing Wi-Fi, but it needs to be two of the same speakers.

You’re not missing anything, this just isn’t a feature that was implemented. I can forward this as a feature request to the relevant teams for their consideration.

Thanks for the answer @Jamie A

So if I’m understanding you correctly I have a few options to solve my problem:

  • Use and Android phone instead of an iPhone
  • Buy the exact same pair of speaker so I have two Moves 2 or two Roam 2 (I can pair them at home with wifi and then go out and use just bluetooth and they will behave like if I had only one speaker)

At the moment I have Move 2, Roam 2 and Roam 1 so no luck on my combo hah

I’ve researched a bit more about the bluetooth problem and I found:

including the latest models like the iPhone 15 Pro Max—still do not natively support this feature. The reason lies in Apple’s limited Bluetooth capabilities, which don’t include Bluetooth Audio LE (Low Energy), a technology that allows devices to broadcast audio to multiple outputs at once.

That’s an odd quote. I’m not sure what BLE has to do with streaming music, they’re two different and disparate technologies. And I’ve used BLE many times on my iPhone to set up stuff, including my Sonos speakers.

It may be that Apple doesn’t support the method of BLE to stream music, but they certainly support BLE for all sorts of setup processes. I think the quote doesn’t fully explain that.

@Airgetlam but here we’re talking about streaming music to multiple speakers at the same time only using bluetooth. Base on the information that I’ve found online, no iPhone support that yet, only some samsung and google phones
