Just picked up a discounted roam 2 and I am having a HECK of a time getting it to work like a sonos speaker.

Aside: I’ve learned done research at this point and learned about the issues with the controller app update. I didn’t actually touch the sonos apps often - mostly just played directly to my previous One SL from apps or airplay. When that speaker stopped working recently I sold it and used the money to buy this one.

I mention the SL because I assumed it was no longer working due to being out of production, or maybe because I had recently switched to mesh (TP-Link Deco) wifi.

Long story short, i got the new Roam 2 to connect to my mesh wifi in 2 or 3 tries yesterday (after a factory reset and logging out of the app, first setup failed on ‘need to update your Roam’). Then this morning app says it doesn’t detect my system. I’ve tried to add it with factory reset and logout 4 or 5 times, and i’ve gone into my mesh wifi settings to tell the router to keep this devices on the 2.4ghz network.

Anything more I do at this point is just throwing stuff at the wall. I can connect the roam to wifi but get an error at the end of the setup that it didn’t fully connect and i should turn the speaker off and on (this does nothing to help the app see the speaker). But I can re-add this speaker to homekit + use airplay + use bluetooth. My thoughts are

  • This could be a mesh wifi thing
  • this could be a defective hardware thing
  • this is most likely an app thing

So i guess I’m wondering if this generally makes sense, sounds like an app issue, and whether i should sit tight with this or just return it

So did the original One SL stop working around the same time you installed the new Deco mesh?

I’m not sure because I so rarely opened the sonos app and never really trusted it to work 100%. When i did open it, it (understandably) couldn’t find that speaker because i was on a new wifi - i did at least one factory reset to re-connect it but it never took, so i said screw sonos, this thing is too big for this room anyways, pretty much unaware of the new app issues, and sold it.

Then 2 weeks later I saw the roam and thought (thanks to my new mesh wifi) a nicer speaker for outdoors would be nice. shame on me

So on the Deco mesh, look for any settings around uPnP and IGMP, these need to be on.

Also make sure the Deco’s are running the latest firmware updates which you should be able to do through the app.

It sounds rather like you factory reset the speaker, but not the Sonos App to create a new Sonos Household. I assume you have no other Sonos speakers? If that’s the case and it’s your one and only Sonos priduct, then reset both the mobile Sonos App and the One SL speaker and on initial setup, first create a new Sonos System (Household) and then add the reset speaker to that HH. If it’s not your one and only speaker then perhaps post back before trying the steps suggested.

I think the issue may have actually been with the network setup - It looks like early on i put a few devices including my phone into ‘device isolation’ - which would make it hard for them to communicate with the speaker once it is actually connected. One more hard reset + setup and i’m connected, so if you don’t hear from me in the coming days assume it was fixed and user error.

Newer Sonos speakers use Bluetooth for initial setup which is why you can change the WiFi settings without doing a factory reset, so that would match up with the speaker ‘disappearing’ after initial setup. Fingers crossed that was it!
