Hello everyone,

I'll try to be clear (although English is not my native language).

My internet connection is via an LTE router (unfortunately I have no choice), which is not supported by Sonos.

The idea would be to connect a Sonos Era 100 with an ethernet cable to the LTE router, so this Sonos Era 100 will create a dedicated wireless network specifically for my Sonos system.

But I only want to connect "portable" Sonos to this system

Question:

Will this dedicated wireless network allow "portable" Sonos (Move 2 or Roam 2) to work properly?

Or on the contrary, are "portable" Sonos definitely excluded from a wired configuration anyway?

I haven't been able to find a clear answer, and I thank you for your help.

Do you mean SonosNet when you say “so this Sonos Era 100 will create a dedicated wireless network specifically for my Sonos system”? If so, no: the Era 100 and 300 will not work on SonosNet

I think you’ll need to buy a router, plug it into the LTE one, and then set up your own wifi on your router  Then connect your Sonos devices to that.

Move2 and Roam2 can connect on wifi. They don’t need a non-portable speaker on the network as well as that portable speaker or speakers.

Au fait, ton anglais est bien meilleur que mon français.

Thank you.

I was talking about this solution

But I wonder if portable Sonos are supported.

That is a diagram to explain how Sonosnet works. Eras are not compatible with Sonosnet. I think Move2 and Roam2 are also incompatible with SonosNet.

Thank you.

So the only solution would be to connect a router to the LTE router ?

Thank you.

I think so, yes. (But cheaper than buying the Era if you only planned to use it to create SonosNet.)

Hold off for a bit though and see if anyone has other suggestions.

Have you actually tried just using the LTE router?  I have done this in the past.  “Not supported” does not mean “will not work”.  There is no reason in principle why the nature of the connection to the internet should affect the ability to use Sonos, provided the link is stable and fast enough.

What will be your sources for audio, e.g. radio, streamed music, local storage?

Thanks a lot !

In fact, noting your location, I have used an LTE router in France.  I think it was a TP-Link.  Sonos worked fine.

Edit…. or maybe it was Netgear….

Yes, I tried. I managed to connect a Sonos Move 2. But then it disconnects, and the system no longer exists. I tried resetting it several times and recreating a new system, but it's the same every time. I thought I could get around the problem by connecting a speaker to this damn LTE router via an ethernet cable...

This second house is in Greece (where I can have sun, but no wired connections…). My internet connection is with this Vodafone GigaCube HH500V router.

You might indeed.  But if your LTE router isn’t working with Sonos, it probably isn’t because it’s LTE.  Sonos is really only concerned with your LAN, not how the data gets to and from the outside world.  Which LTE router are you using?

Our posts crossed.

It seems to me that the problem is probably in the way your router and the Sonos system and your mobile controller are communicating (or not), rather than in the nature of your router’s connection to the internet.

I suspect that when you say that “the system no longer exists” what is actually the case is that your Sonos app cannot see it, because the signal is not getting through your router.

The solution (or a solution) probably lies in the WiFi settings of your Gigacube.  But I am not sure where and don’t know this product at all.  But it may be worth checking that the router is at least using a WiFi protocol that your Sonos speaker can connect to.

You definitely aren’t using a “guest” network?

You’re right : my Sonos App cannot see anything. Each time, even when the Move 2 was reset and connected to a new Sonos system that I created again, the Move 2 disconnects after some time, and then my Sonos App says something like « no system »

I don’t use any guest WiFi.

I will try next month, when I will be back in Greece, to check the WiFi protocol. And I will tell you.

Thanks for all.

It might also be a firewall, “client isolation” or other security issue.  Most things that connect to a router don’t need to talk to other things connected to a router.  For example, your smart TV doesn’t need to talk to your smart fridge.  Sonos devices need to stay in touch constantly with each other and with controller devices.  This can be misinterpreted by a router as potentially harmful, and so be prevented.

That can happen with any router, whether LTE or not, and may just need a setting or two to be altered.  The difficulty lies in knowing what to change and how!

There is a lot of speculation in this, and I could be completely wrong, but it may be worth exploring with Vodafone Support.

I hope you manage to resolve this problem

Update.

I tried to connect my LTE router to a Sonos Boost (that I have always kept in my attic, even if I have not used it for a long time), thinking that maybe the network created by the Sonos Boost would change things.

Unfortunately, nothing changed, and I still can't create a Sonos system. I can just use my Sonos Move2 via bluetooth 🙁

The Move (and Move 2) will not connect to a signal (SonosNet) created by a BOOST, it must be connected to your WiFi.

If memory serves, the Sonos One was the last speaker that could connect to a SonosNet signal. All speakers released after that could not, meaning the Move, Roam, Era, and Arc Ultra all require either a LAN cable or connection to your WiFi.

Thank you Airgetlam for your answers.

I tried this solution with a BOOST withour knowing that Move2 can’t connect to it.

Next time, I will try the solution of pluging in a router into my LTE, and I will tell you if it works.
