to listen to xm radio on sonos playbar does the xm radio have to be plugged into the playbar?

You will need the XM Internet Subscription add on to set up the Account in Sonos. The Playbar(Sonos) will connect to XM over your internet connection.

No, when you set up your XM account in the Sonos software, it provides the data to the Sonos speaker, which is the thing that goes out and gets the data from XM's servers.
so does that mean i won't need the little xm radio i've been using hooked up to my sony audio receiver. would this mean i need to have the tv turned on to listen to xm thru sonos speaker?
Presuming your Sonos Playbar is connected to the network / internet you don't need to have the TV on. You just start the XM stream on your computer or mobile device in the Sonos app.
