I have a tv and wanted to put a beam behind the couch, far enough away from the tv that it doesn’t make sense to hdmi the beam to the TV through arc.

I wanted to see my options, but my understanding is that the tv must be hooked up physically to a sonos product if I want to get it playing on a sonos device of any kind. (even though the tv is wifi and bluetooth enabled samsung)

If this is the case, I do have a sonos amp in the closet next to the tv that I could hook the tv up to. the question is,

if i hook the tv up to the amp, is there a way to make the tv not play through the speakers connected to the amp (they are in another room) and instead have the beam play the tv.

or are there other options. or is my only option to directly plug my tv into my beam.

Why would you want a Beam behind you?  The reason soundbars are mounted under the TV is because all sounds which are anchored to the picture come out of the L/C/R speakers of the soundbar.  It would be very strange for the voices and sounds on the screen to be coming from behind you.  Behind is where the surround speakers go, for they are the ones that handle ambient or directional sounds that aren’t on the screen.

the person im setting it up for is hard of hearing and the tv is far enough away that being under the tv wouldn’t help. I do agree with you though.

There is really no way to do it without an HDMI connection.  You could investigate wireless HDMI transmitters, or mount the Beam normally and use two non-surround speakers to group with the Beam.  Note, TV will be slightly delayed on the non-surrounds when grouped, but it may not be noticeable.

Maybe Sonos isn't the best solution for this use case. Perhaps a pair of Bluetooth headphones would be better, if the TV can output Bluetooth audio. Or a Sonos Move if you want to stick with Sonos.

Ok, so bottom line is that I can't hook the tv up to another device through HDMI (for example the Sonos amp) then have it play on the beam.

Cause I have the tv hooked up to the amp and it will play on the speakers connected to that..

Seems a bit crazy that I can't add the beam to that group/play whatever's playing on the amp on the beam

You can, but the other speakers will still play, and the Beam will be delayed.  There’s no way to listen to a TV source on the Beam and not have the Amp speakers active, though I guess you would turn the volume down on the Amp, which would be a pain, but would work.

I am not sure how you have concluded this from what has been said so far.  You could group the Amp and the Beam to listen through the Beam.  You would not be able to listen to anything other than the TV audio on the speakers attached to the Amp while it was being used in this way.

This doesn’t sound like a good idea to me, but it’s your call.
