Spotty volume control reception / control between Arc and Amazon Firestick remote - only works upside down

Controlling volume on my Arc from my Amazon remote is often spotty, sometimes no reception. I usually have to turn the remote upside down to get reception. I have changed the batteries and re-paired often. Re-pairing seems to help but only a short time (only a few hours) before reception degrades again. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Any fixes?
