I use my Sonos Ray perhaps in an unconventional manner.

I do not connect to it via optical cable - but via airplay using an Apple TV.

So when I stream video from an ATV all audio is via airplay to the Ray.

BBC iPlayer and Netflix sound fine with dialogue - but Disney Plus is terrible - and the speech enhancements are ineffective using the Sono Ray options and EQ.

I have only owned my Ray for a couple of days - it sounds great apart from Disney Plus speech which is dismal to say the least!

To the best of my knowledge, AirPlay 2 is currently only stereo when used to connect to a Sonos device. This means there is no center channel for Speech Enhancement to work on. I’d be interested if things change if you connect your Ray via that optical cable, so it can receive a 5.1signal, instead of stereo.

Thanks - and a shame. Because other than that over airplay things are fine - it’s just Disney Plus. The Ray is a stereo device, so I thought speech enhancement worked in the stereo domain and it didn’t require optical to decode 5.1.

What’s new to me is knowing that the Ray can take in a 5.1 signal even though it doesn’t have the speaker arrangement to support it.

Is there any other funky way to get speech enhanced over airplay do you think.

Have you run Trueplay on the Ray? That should help enormously with sound EQ which could positively impact what you hear on Disney+.

But otherwise, you’ll need to wire it to the TV to get the effect of Speech Enhancement.

The Ray is not a stereo device, it is (as probably all soundbars) FL-Center-FR. But in stereo the center does nothing.

The Ray is a stereo soundbar with two woofers and two tweeters. It only has a left and right channel with no center channel. Although the speakers are placed in the center of the soundbar, there is no dedicated center channel.
