Hi,

I have a Sonos Beam Gen 2 and all works fine with my TV via HDMI.

I also have an old Karaoke system (Debra Pro X7 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0B6C6LHN8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1), which has optical inputs/outputs and works fine with my old soundbar.

However, I cannot get it to work with the Sonos.

TV HDMI to Sonos HDMI - OK

TV Optical to Sonos HDMI (via Sonos Optical/HDMI adaptor) - OK

TV Optical to Karaoke Optical to Sonos HDMI (via Sonos Optical/HDMI adaptor) - NO AUDIO

TV Optical to Karaoke Optical to Denon Soundbox Optical - OK

There is obviously an incompatibility between Sonos and the Karaoke box but what could it be?

The Karaoke box instructions does state the following "For different versions of optical fiber interfaces, some compatibility issues may occur. Resulting in no sound being output. This is due to the incompatibility of the optical interface version of the speaker.".

As far as I am aware the optical is PCM in all cases so why won't it work?  I realise I may have to buy another karaoke system but how will I know whether this will have the same issues?

Any help/advice much appreciated.

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

Sorry to hear of this issue you are having with no audio coming from your Karaoke system.

I can only presume that whatever feed is coming from the Karaoke system is out of TOSLink (optical) specification, or that the PCM sample rate or some other factor is unsupported by Sonos.

If you like, I can try to see what is coming through, and although I am not entirely sure that I will be able to determine anything of use, I think it worth checking - please play content on the Karaoke machine through the Beam and submit a support diagnostic while playing with no audio. Please let me know here when you have done so, and I’ll take a look for you. Please don’t share the diagnostic number given, however.

As for replacing the Karaoke machine with another, I can only really recommend that you check to see if it complies with the supported audio formats we support: you can see these on our Supported home theater audio formats help page.

  1. TV optical output to karaoke mixer optical input
  1. karaoke optical output to Sonos optical/HDMI adaptor to Sonos Beam gen 2

Step 2 used to work ok with my old deceased Denon DHT-T110 Soundbase (optical input)).

Thanks for the diagnostic - no need to post the number, no.

So the Beam is reporting that the Karaoke machine is outputting at a sample rate of 96,000 KHz - this sample rate is unsupported by Sonos and will not play.

If the machine has an option to change this, please change the sample rate to 48,000KHz at the most. If there is no option to do this, you will need either another Karaoke machine, or perhaps some kind of third-party resampling device - I just did a quick search on these and while they do exist, the ones I found are rather expensive, though it looks like this is because they support even higher rates. You may be able to find something much cheaper.

One option might be to connect your Beam to the TV with HDMI, and connect your old soundbar to the Karaoke machine, and it to the TV. When you want to switch from watching a movie to playing Karaoke, you may be able to disable CEC on the TV and then switch to the optical output in the TV’s settings (if you don’t disable CEC, the TV may just switch back to using the Beam. Note that different manufacturers have different names for CEC - you may need to internet-search CEC and the brand name to find the setting).

Thanks for your help - very informative more than I expected.

Unfortunately my old soundbar has died so is of no use.  However, I think I have found an alternative solution:

  1. TV optical output to karaoke mixer optical input
  2. TV HDMI to Beam Gen 2 HDMI
  3. Karaoke mixer 3.5mm jack output to RCA line input of an old Denon UD-M31 music system 

TV sound is through Sonos

TV sound and karaoke is mixed, and comes through Denon music system speakers.

I mute Sonos when doing karaoke so all sound is through Denon music system (UD-M31)
