My TV is recessed into the wall and it’s eye level when sitting -- about 20 inches off the floor. can I place a Beam below it on a shelf? My other option would be to mount ti above the TV. In either case, the Beam would be above or below ear level.

If you can, I’d suggest just below the TV, although you might test both locations, and see which you prefer.
If you don’t have any furniture blocking the “Beam to ear” path in the low position I’d try that first.
Here we have a big coffee table that would block direct sound from your low position, so high would be our only option.
