Would adding a 2nd sub to the front of the room right under the TV make any sense? I already have a sub right behind the couch. The reason why it’s not in the back corners is because I wanted to keep the base down for my neighbors. It can’t be in the corners up front because there is no wall. It’s a weird room.

It depends what you are trying to achieve.

Multiple subs are good for counteracting room response and giving an even bass response across a larger area and multiple seating positions, but still need positioning and setting up. The proven locations for a pair of subs are in diagonally opposite front/rear corners or opposite each other on the side walls.

For a single seating location, if the Sub at the rear of the room is already giving you a bass presence you want and are happy with where you sit then a 2nd at the front of the room is likely to make little difference.

Adding a second Sub would add a little more rumble to the room, so then you would also need to reduce the sub level within the app to compensate. Counterproductive if you ask me. But I can not determine if it will actually fill the space between your TV and couch enough to accomplish what you want. Why not try moving the Sub you already have to the spot under the TV to see if that works first, then decide if a second Sub is really needed?

If I blindfold you, then take you into a room with a subwoofer and ask you to point to the subwoofer, your accuracy will be poor. Your accuracy will improve if the subwoofer is placed behind the listening position.

Personally, I prefer the subwoofer to vaguely be in the same plain as the front speakers. Bass is then integrated with the mids and highs. I know a guy who has his SUB in a rear corner and set aggressively. He loves bass and the room certainly “thumps”. He loves it. I find the room to be very annoying.

Everyone has their own idea of “best”.

I agree, little value in a second sub, if you are concerned about neighbours with one sub.

I’m another one of those guys who prefers boundary loading from a sub in corner of my room, the room is L shaped, and sub is in corner of the L. Not aggressive though, EQ is flat ‘0’ and loudness off.

Have you considered flipping the Sub flat and sliding it under the couch?

Maybe use a long extension cord and try walking the Sub around the room looking for a sweet spot. Don’t rule out the corners or side walls in your quest.

In spite of what I said above I have dual SUB’s attached to my ARC. Sure, I can rattle the windows and photos hung on the wall, but I don’t have the SUB’s set so aggressively. I like the very smooth, effortless quality of the bass and the bass has no obvious point of origin. If I’m watching an action flick, there can be plenty of Boom.

Thanks everyone! I’ll try it around the room and see where it’s best. I should have mentioned the room is about 30’ x 30’ with one end open (no walls).

Ok I moved it to the front and it sounds more even but it doesn’t rumble the couch anymore. Is that the way it should be?

Yes. Subwoofers are meant to subtly provide a stronger bass to your system, not shake you off your couch.

Which do you prefer? That would be the position to put it in for your taste.

As I think responses in this thread show, different people have different preferences for how much bass a sub produces.
