I've heard some YouTube reviewer state that you can use just 1 rear Era 300 Centrally for rear surround effects (Atmos) with Beam Gen 2 or Arc. Is this correct

No. Sonos does not support a single rear speaker as ‘surrounds’, they require a pair.

That was my feeling but thought I would clarify as I'm considering which would give me the better upgrade, 2 x era 300 for the rears (replacing my ones) or changing the Beam Gen 2 for an ARC
That’s a tossup, in my perspective. Eventually, you probably want to do both, it’s fortunate that Sonos allows ‘partial’ upgrades :)
